Arun, Upashna – I think BR would’ve rated Mithya a high-4 if not 5. These ratings are what appear in the print edition of these reviews, and BR started using them only June/July. So no ratings for Mithya or JA.
BR – Am I right?

Arun, Upashna: Yes, Mithya would have been a high four. As a principle, I would not give a five-star rating to a film, because masterpieces, IMO, make themselves known more as a matter of retrospect, and over time — and rarely while actually watching the film.

Couldn’t agree more on this sir…..when ‘kaho na pyar hai’ released in the early 2000, people started giving it all forms of epithets but would we like to watch it(given that it is shown so many times on the television) now?
You missed Welcome to Sajjanpur…..from your reviews I understand you were not very impressed with the detour Shyam Benegal took right?

Wanted to ask you-do you sometimes find it unjustified to ‘rate’ a movie because a movie can be exceptional, good, average at places and terrible, poor, bad at the rest…..bringing everything under one umbrella and giving the whole movie a consolidated rating-don’t you think it is a bit unfair on our part?
And do you have any specified parameters while rating a movie-like what comes to your mind first just before you rate a movie-do you consider the vision of the director and the execution, or the performances of the actors…..? Which factor do you give more importance to?
And sir, what I like the most about your reviews that you don’t call a movie good, bad, bakwaas outright-in fact ‘kaash…..mere hote’ must be the first review in which I am reading the word ‘bakwaas’ in your review…..don’t you think the star rating may present quite a misleading picture about the movie?

Hari: The ratings are something the paper thrust on me last year, when it underwent a redesign. Ratings are a highly random process, and yes, I agree that parts of the same film can be good/bad/ugly and that’s why most get lumped under some form of three stars (or the “average”) category.
One of the more interesting form of ratings I’ve seen was in the Tamil magazine Anandha Vikatan, perhaps in the eighties. They used to have a score for the first half, and another one for the second half, and then they’d average it out for the whole film.

BR< LOL at that Ananda Vikatan method. I’ll propose an alternative method:
Find running time of movie.
Divide into 4 roughly equal parts
Score the 4 parts
Take the average
Calculate Std Deviation
Add/Subtract Std Deviation to average depending on whether the roughly equal parts are more towards the bottom or top of the 4 numbers
