Madhusudhanan/ Harish S: I know, I know. I’ve often had these questions while on the other side. Now that I’m on this side, all I can say is that you’ll have to check with Penguin 😀

@BR
As long as Manirathnam continues to make movies, you are guaranteed to have a steady income.Keep adding chapters to your book . Even though His recent movies had me wishing that he would retire ,For your sake at least i hope mani doesn’t quit 🙂
PS: yeah as @Venkatesh pointed out , you had mentioned about writing a book on KB. I think it was in an article in Caravan. Or have the naysayers that you mentioned in the same article dissuaded you from this endevour.

MANK: Actually, I can’t keep adding chapters. This “Kadal” chapter is an anomaly. Usually, nothing changes between hardcover and paperback, but this time it so happened that there was a film in between. The next additions in the book will only come in the next edition, maybe ten years down the line — if he’s willing to talk and if I’m available…
sachita: I’ve passed on the request, at least for the e-version. Let’s see…

Ajith: Yes, this is a book in the conversational format. And no, he doesn’t defend the film till the end. He’s quite frank about his shortcomings.
cpvenkatesh: Isn’t the link on Amazon and Flipkart?
Vikram: As I said, have passed on the request to Penguin. Will keep you posted.

Now that the paperback is out, Rangan, I have a question: if you would ever want to have such a conversation with an actor, as opposed to a director, who would it be?

I saw the paperback yesterday at the Hyderabad airport, and decided to read the ‘Kadal’ chapter (I have the hardbound non-Kadal version at home). I didn’t get to finish it, what with my my wife growing more and more impatient as I seemed rooted at the book section.
I saw Kadal (again, didn’t see the whole thing) on TV, and frankly, the chapter seemed more interesting than the movie.
Clearly, the movie didn’t connect for some of the reasons that were discussed in that chapter (the dialect, too many strands of story).Mani mentions Paruthi Veeran and how it worked with the audiences, despite the problem with the dialect there too, and how he had expected the same to work with Kadal as well. I don’t quite agree with some of the reasons discussed there (the whole brouhaha with Viswaroopam, the posters indicating a kind of young love story etc) because a good gripping film will find its audience no matter what.
For me, the biggest problem with Kadal (which was not there even with Raavan) was that it didn’t really achieve the kind of rawness Mani was apparently after. Yes, it had that on its sleeve and its milieu, but something wasn’t quite there. Frankly, Mani’s manner of story telling has never gotten down ‘into the gutters’ so to speak. His style of film making which seems to be one of taking snapshots across time, where we see his protagonists at their ‘cleanest’ behavior. The nastiness of these characters is implied time and again, but since Mani is so interested in this clean veneer, we never see the dirty deeds per se.
Perhaps someone else may have made a better movie of this material – someone in the Anurag Kashyap mold of film making.

Finally got around read to reading the Kindle version with Kadal chapter. The book was fantastic, a very deep insight into some of the movies that had defined my early years. I felt a little disappointed that we didn’t really get any thoughts from Mani Ratnam on the current state of film industry and its future, an epilogue chapter would have helped.
I hope your plan to write a book on KB materializes soon enough, he is not getting any younger. If you cannot get enough funding, I would suggest looking at something like Kickstarter , I would be happy to contribute.

Kind intimation from a reader:
“When I bought the ‘Conversations with Mani Ratnam’ book, it didn’t have the chapter on ‘Kadal’. I have read comment threads on your blog where people have asked for that chapter to be made available. I was delighted to find it on Google Play.
I presume that many of your readers are still looking for it. Here’s the link to the e-book on the Google play US store: https://play.google.com/store/books/details/Baradwaj_Rangan_Conversations_with_Mani_Ratnam?id=i75zCgAAQBAJ
The price ($1.68) is fair. I’m not sure if it is available in India. I couldn’t check that from the US. If you share it on your blog, I think it’ll make a lot of readers happy.”
