Spoilers ahead…
In some parallel dimension we aren’t aware of, there must be theatre chains screening Mysskinin Jai Hind 2 and Mani Ratnamin Jai Hind 2 and Selvaraghavanin Jai Hind 2, and to avoid confusion, star and director Arjun appends his name to his movie: it’s called Arjunin Jai Hind 2. Not that there’s much doubt. There’s a scene featuring the national flag, and the plot itself is a rehash of Gentleman, one of Arjun’s biggest hits. The crux is quality education, which the poor don’t have access to. Also from that film are the two heroines – one nice, one naughty. For a while, I was pleasantly surprised by Nandini (Surveen Chawla), a demure Brahmin girl who isn’t draped in chiffon saris and positioned near industrial fans and asked to sing songs about ants that have invaded her body, the way Ranjitha was in the original Jai Hind. The romance between Nandini and Abhimanyu (Arjun) is mature, and when we first glimpse Nandini, we see a thaali. How wonderful, I thought, for this kind of mass-masala entertainer to telegraph, so early on, the unavailability of its heroine. And then we get the second half where a twenty-something student falls for Abhimanyu and imagines a dream duet where he circles around her in a fancy bike as she sways in a miniskirt. It’s a marvel one of our filmmakers hasn’t yet written that bestseller, How to Have It All.
Arjunin Jai Hind 2 is the kind of film about which you shrug and say, “Well, if you liked Jai Hind…” This isn’t exactly a sequel (the characters are different), but it’s suffused with the same vibe: how to do your bit for the nation while demonstrating your prowess in the martial arts. Don’t laugh. At least I didn’t during the action sequences, which are pretty well done. Arjun looks amazingly fit, and he actually seems to be executing these gravity-defying moves, without the help of wires. The narrative, too, is spry – at least up to a point – leaping back and forth, thanks to a series of flashbacks used to advance the plot. And then, perhaps realising that his core audience isn’t after education-oriented message-mongering, Arjun unleashes the rocket launchers. The film suddenly (one might say randomly) switches gears – it becomes a prison drama, and then we get a hostage-rescue scenario. But is there any point complaining about coherence or plausibility? If you have to watch a film about a one-man army, you could do worse than watch one with Arjun in it. He totally pulls it off. Of how many fifty-plus leading men can you say that?

The thing I recall about the original Jaihind was that it gave Vidyasagar his first big hit in Tamil….the songs were big hits then. Arjun is probably one actor who has never been taken seriously in Tamil cinema (or he choose to just follow his own path). Sure, he has limitations, but given the opportunity, he has delivered some awesome films playing effective roles….Kuruthipunal, Rhythm, Kadal come to mind immediately. Even back from the days of “Kakki sattai potta machan”, he has never been considered a top tier hero (just my opinion) despite making fairly successful movies.

I am glad to see – at least from your review – that Arjun has not served up the kind of dross that he did with Vedham, Parasuram, etc. He is supremely fit and can act reasonably well (save the “haayyyy” sound that he lets out every time he sees someone dead) yet hasn’t gotten nearly as much respect or the right opportunities like prabhu and karthik did in their heydays…
I absolutely loved him in “Rhythm,” which is one of my all time favorites. He was so…gentlemanly! I don’t want to confuse a nice character with a good performance. But I thought he did full justice to the well written character…he was wonderful in the dinner scene with his parents which featured one of my all-time favorite lines in the movies – “Romba Nalla Paiyyan Paa Nee; Unaku Innum Konjam Nalladhu Nadakalaam?”
Mr. Rangan, oru one bullet point about Rhythm please? (from a theevira Vasanth rasigan+nanban)

Arjun, to me, is in the mini league of Suriya, Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram, occasionally Simbu (the VTV one), Anand (Thiruda Thiruda), Pasupathy. Simhaa (from JT) will join soon.
They are the mass ( just massy enough ) the classes like to like and approve of (Rajinikant leads the pack here, and is miles ahead), and the class ( just classy enough ) the masses like to like and see of (Kamal Haasan leads the pack here, and is miles ahead).
note: Vijay, Vijaykanth, Ajith, Siddharth, Jeeva, Madhavan don’t fall in this category. They are either here or there (or as in the case of Siddharth, neither)
Good for a friend, of an assured presence, a polar opposite yet a friend (your mother will also approve of), kind of an aide not a mere side-kick, the borderline cynic(and/or skeptic) whom you want to befriend (“to win the other side“)
Rajeev Menon wants them, Madras Talkies wants them, Kamal Haasan wants them.

Shankar: Trust you to remember “Kakki chattai potta machan” 🙂
Ram Murali: Yes, “Rhythm” was a pretty good film. I really liked Arjun in that.

also, “Arjunin” is a harmless gaffe by the publicity designer?
“Arjun in Jai Hind 2?”
(or if it is the case, sorry for killing your joke!)

Baddy, glad you got the connection! 🙂 I believe, that was Arjun’s first big hit in Tamil cinema.
BTW, do you know he was born Aug 15th? Maybe that explains why he went patriotic with a vengeance! 🙂

Arjun, has there ever been a Hero who is so “A-class” audience material and stuck firmly in “B-class” territory ?
He is fit (very fit), speaks english fluently , dances well, looks good and is fair.
After Gentleman, Jai Hind, Sadhu.Karna, Kuruthipunal i just thought he would progress to a Mani Ratnam style movie but he went on to do Adimai Sangili and Thaayin Manikodi … intriguing this.

He got introduced to Tamil cinema Ramanarayanan (mass, oops Mass just by number of movies he directed!) and most of his hits are the mass movies and so he is. After Mudhalvan and Rhythm, his hits are Ezhumalai, Giri, Marudhamalai etc. His attempts at claasss movies like Arasatchi, Moonu per moonukku podhal and even Kadal have been blockbuster disasters. We can expect Arjunin Ezhumalai 2 soon.. 😀

Arjun is definitely more physically capable than most. What would people say his best action scenes are?

Have you just made Arjun sound like a heroine? 🙂
bart: I don’t think you can include “Kadal” and “Moondru Per…” in that list. They were epic flops, yes, but they also weren’t Arjun’s films, in the sense that he wasn’t the main draw and his core fan base certainly wouldn’t have rushed to these films.

Surprising our makers cant think of a “Taken” remake with Arjun or something along those lines. He is a good fit for that role at this stage of his career and would look more believable than Neeson in the hand combat scenes. Maye the director who made Arima Nambi can do this.
BTW, kind of editor sends you to watch arjunin Jai Hind 2 of all films?Or was it your own decision?

Yes, I’m quite surprised that some Indian filmmaker hasn’t ripped it off and shoe-horned in needless songs and romance.

– ooh, well spotted.
But that really is the template for our A-centre heroes , isn’t it.

People like Arjun are good for tamil cinema. They make movies, add to the crowd in the endless dharnas and do some justice to the roles when challenged enough.
He is better than a muscle monster Sarath or save the nation Gaptun! (At least Gaptun had a good first half)… People like Arjun, sathyaraj are after thoughts in tamil cinema but definetly add flavor… Right?

Yes Kadal and MPMK were not “Arjunin” but “Arjun also in”. But can’t blame him for not trying his “bit”.
I think “Taken” has been “taken” in Tamil. The very same two names taken in the comment earlier, have muscled their way in “Jaggubhai” and “Virudhagiri”..
Your judgement hasn’t failed you I suspect – “Oru oorla..” has been reviewed worse compared to JH-2. Pity that Imman’s decent tunes have gone wasted again..

Not sure, if I have felt so bad watching an Arjun movie before. This movie take back Tamil cinema to its terrible state (as for mainstream movies)20 or 30 years back, absolute stupidity at its worst, inspite of wanting to give a good and clear message.
The only time you felt anything was those combat scenes, which takes may be 5 or 10 minutes at the most. During these times of Jigarthanada and Panniyaarum Padminiyum, even Kathhi which was a good entertainer in the second half, he has big balls to come up with such a movie.

I believe his debut was a minor hit but his big hit was Yaar, a super natural movie.
His mustache was the issue, before Gentleman he patched it, before that he looks like a chinese fighter with two bit at each end and nothing in between 🙂 .
