Waiting for both – his interview with you and Nenjam Marappathillai.
P.S.: I remember there was an earlier interview of yours with him which wasn’t upto the BR standards :p .. Just kidding.

I am fan of Selva so was looking forward to this but it feels to me that he is having hard time trying to articulate what he wants to say. Is it a language issue or is he someone who is not very good at expressing himself?

Posted too quickly. I meant to say “not very good at expressing himself with words” since he express himself very well via his movies.
If its an language issues, why not just conduct the interview in Tamil? Or is that option out of your hands?
The reason why I ask is that, say if I am someone who is not Tamil and watched this interview, I would have come out with very low opinion of Selva.

Sorry once again! Is there any way to edit comments after having posted them?
I am not someone who is very good at expressing himself with words so I like the edit button!

mein gott .Brangan, i wish you could reach across and vigorously shake shelva to infuse some energy in to the proceedings. 🙂 . i dont think you have ever talked so much in a video interview, having to ask questions and answer them at the same time
Now i dont know if this is Selva’s natural self or its the language (which i doubt), but some guys just dont do well in video interviews, they just become so self conscious and tongue tied when they have a camera in front of them, he is most definitely more comfortable behind the camera.. Its much much better if the interview is more in the written form in such cases

Meh interview (not on your part). He was sounding philosophical and going off tangent for some straight forward questions.

Thanks BR. Good preparation from your side but somehow he seems to be a bit lost in general. Few answers were so vague that you did an “..ahem..” and moved on :)) . He has probably gotten tired overall or his interview skills are limited. Though I did see parts of few of his more spirited interviews on some tamil youtube channels when NM was planned to be released a few months back.
Hoping that NM with its box office returns gives him the required mojo to reflect his “passion” in his interviews as well.
P.S.: Your sitting posture is getting interesting. In an earlier interview, you had one leg folded on the couch. In the next one we might we might see you lying back, yawning while tossing your questions :)) Getting comfortable literally.. 🙂

Wow I hope he exhausted all his energy on the upcoming movie. Sounds like he is dead inside.

Were you doing some kind of yoga to keep yourself calm till the interview got over? That sitting posture 😛
The session felt like a movie directed by Ram

Oh man, he seemed so uninterested. I mean you threw everything at him and he was trying to bring out his inner zen or something and gave bland responses to all of them. Did you realize it during the interview?

I have one question to Selva..When so many young flim makers without any background like him and who have much more challenges than selva. if they can give some outstanding work like “kaaka muttai”, “Aandavan kattalai”, “uriyadi” to name just a few, why he is still living in the past and always depressing. I am not comparing him with others each directors has their own vision and approach. Pudhupettai came during 2006. Its been 11 years since then and in this 11 years, and IMO we are just overrating him or he is overrating himself.

Is it possible that he simply doesn’t like you because you’re a movie critic? He may be a bit okay with a regular interviewer. Either that or it’s just the way he is. I’ve not watched his other interviews so wouldn’t know.

avan: These things are hard to explain. One can only prepare and go there, and then try to conduct an energetic session. If that does not happen, there could be a number of reasons. Maybe he wasn’t in the mood. Maybe he was tired from a night of writing. Maybe an upcoming film isn’t working out and he didn’t have the bandwidth…
Personally speaking, when I looked at the footage, I found it quite interesting, because it gave me an insight into a particular phase of a filmmaker, where he seems to be in a Zen space. But a lot of people have told me it didn’t work for them.
You just move on to Vishnu Vishal and Catherine Tresa and hope this one works 🙂

@avan: I don’t think that would be the case. I still remember the picture of Selva putting out his cigarette and talking about books and sex during AO interview with BR. Maybe through words, BR made something seem more interesting than what we as the audience see?

“Personally speaking, when I looked at the footage, I found it quite interesting, because it gave me an insight into a particular phase of a filmmaker”
What if the questions were more about his movie characters than about the creator himself? Being an introvert, he may have opened up more? I understand it is hard to guess what the interviewee likes to be asked. In general, do you focus on what interests you (or) audience (or) interviewee?
In any case, I think your artistry with words would have made this more interesting – than the video.
