Santhanam’s latest attempt to position himself as a matinee idol pivots on an utterly original plot: the hero falls for a gangster’s sister. Yazhini (Vaibhavi Shandilya) is a number. She is given the utterly original trait of arrogance; she likes to taunt men. She stops her car at a traffic light and blows a kiss at Santhanam. When he shows no interest, she follows him to a poolside and jumps into the water with this utterly original logic: “Two piece-a pottu vandhu avan mind-a piece piece aakkaren.” He still won’t budge, and I sat back, awaiting the next logical progression of her pursuit: a nudist colony. Alas, we get, instead, this scene where he slaps her and says, “Pattu thuni, panju, ponnunga – ellaam soft-a irukkanum. Adhaan azhagu.”

Hi Baradwaj – is the rating for the movie 3 stars correct? Your review doesn’t seem to correlate with it…

“GL Sethuraman’s Sakka Podu Podu Raja is the kind of bad movie that makes you look enviously at the man who’s sinking in quicksand”
I was RODLING at this comment for so long….

Am I a film critic?
Where do you begin for a movie like this? Let me start with a confession. Ever since I started writing these reviews for movies, there has always been that slight doubt as to whether I am qualified to do this. Do I understand the nuances of filmmaking to really appreciate the art? Actually not. Then I justify myself easily with the thought that a review is just my opinion and anybody can give one. But the thought is always there in the corner of my mind. I might never gather enough courage to call myself a film critic. But then comes a movie like Sakka Podu Podu Raja that dispels all my fears. It is as though the makers wanted to tell me ‘ When we can be called filmmakers for making movies like these, what the hell are you confused for?’
Having watched the trailer I honestly did not walk into the film with any hopes. But nothing could prepare me for what was on store. There are bad jokes. There are ridiculous jokes. There are even unfunny jokes. But then there are jokes like the ones in this film. They send you to a state of obliviousness. The movie was so loud with every actor hamming it up. But there I was in the auditorium, completely unaffected by all this din. Given the authority, I might have considered conferring sainthood to myself for watching this film with such composure.
It is obvious that Santhanam wants to be a star. He gets an opening song with lyrics doubling up as advices to humanity. But he is the one who needs advice the most at this point. Sakka Podu Podu Raja actually completes a full circle for this man. After playing the hero’s friend in numerous films and mocking at them, here he is mocking himself to full effect.
So you guys might think I have thrashed this movie. May be true. But it is nowhere close to the thrashing I received from the movie yesterday. You know what was more painful than the movie itself? Seeing few people laughing for some of the jokes on screen. These people put back the fear in me about calling myself a film critic. Maybe I am really not qualified to write about Sakka Podu Podu Raja.

It’s all the censor’s dread and not the fear of Yazhini’s brother that stops our hero from slapping her bottom rather than cheeks. Similarly if Santhanam had been given freedom to mouth profainities and sleazy crudities instead of corny jokes, the movie could still have gained the applause of proletariat.

Santhanam was only somewhat funny to me as a comedian. He has the looks and the voice for a star. Maybe instead of trying a movie that tries to blend star+comedian, he should go on a full-serious role that people would never expect him to take (like Vivek in Naan Thaan Bala.) After all he’s famous, his last few movies have been failing anyways, he hasn’t got much to lose. Experimentation is beginning to dominate masala in Tamil cinema and it’s time he jumps on the bandwagon.
