In Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, a young criminal kills a cop, flees, falls in love, dreams of a future in a different country, and discovers that life has a way of messing up your plans. Each of these beats is referenced to some degree in Aashiq Abu’s Mayaanadhi (Magical River), but with a swoony intensity that’s a world apart. The narrative is made up of two strands. The first has vengeful cops on the trail of Mathan (Tovino Thomas), who’s killed one of their own. But it’s the second that makes the movie, the delicate thread that binds Mathan and Aparna (Aishwarya Lekshmi). We’ve seen many falling-in-love films, many falling-out-of-love films. This is a being-in-love film, with all the passions and problems the term suggests.
Mayaanadhi opens with scenes of Mathan (his gang is up to some shady business involving rubies and a stack of dollar bills). We then shift to scenes with Aparna, a small-time actress auditioning for a film helmed by the character played by Lijo Jose Pellissery, something that involves mystical CGI effects. (The thought of Pellissery, who made the ultra-gritty Angamaly Diaries, in this Avatar mode gave me a big laugh.) After emceeing a wedding (thanks to her mother’s emotional blackmail), Aparna is picking up dinner on the way home, when Mathan appears before her. I thought this was the meet-cute. It’s something else. They met cute a long time ago. Now, we’re flipping to a much-later chapter in their story.

Great Review. There has been a world of improvement in the treatment of female characters in recent malayalam films which i find very heartening.The new gen directors and writers are making a conscious effort towards creating full blooded , multi dimensional women characters.. i think “Sex is not a promise” was perhaps the director and writers getting a little overzealous about it.
Out of the 4 Christmas releases, 3 of them have been wonderful movies – This one, vimanam and Aadu2 . I cant remember when was the last time we had so many good movies coming out at the same time. And even though all the noise and theaters has been for Mammookka’s mass tragedy masterpiece, glad to hear that all 3 films are picking up with good WOM

2017 has been a good year for Malayalam cinema. The first half of the year saw Takeoff and Angamaly Diaries, both of which have deserving attained cult status. In the second half of the year we came across a gem like Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum. There were many other good films this year like Karutha Joothan, Parava, Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu, Oru Mexican Aparatha, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Minnaminungu, Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela etc. It is apt that the year ends with a bang with a film like Mayaanadhi.
@BR – Await your list of Top films this year. I hope you will extend your scope to cover Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil & Telugu films as part of FC South editorial team.

@Ratish Ravindran Munthirivallikal was this year? Then that’s the worst film I have seen this year. Didn’t like Mexican Aparatha either, haven’t watched Minnaminungu, Karutha Joothan. Agree with rest of the list.
Yet to watch Mayaanadhi, and what’s the official english title? I thought Mayaanadhi means Mystic River, any malayalam experts?

Sounds very interesting, but I don’t think that I can watch it anytime soon. Should wait for the home media releases of this and Meyaadha Maan. Of course, with subtitles!

Absolutely loved the movie that was put together by a bunch of passionate individuals who make films right from their heart. For probably the first time in career, Aashiq abu appears to be extremely sure about his material and paces the film beautifully. The writing from his most trusted duo was stunningly, original. Angamaly, Thondimuthal too were realistic, the latter was rich in detail, atmospherics as well but the flow in the narrative was not as exquisite. The baawra moment, you were talking about, was one of those audacious decisions by the crew. Another director, making film from his head, would never have placed such a tender scene just minutes before the climax. The cameos from two established directors were really impressive, I had a great laugh out of that Basil Joseph scene. Tovino-Aishwarya tele conversation before the audition is an absolute gem that makes you both laugh and cry. The beautifully picturised love making scene and the proceedings that follow breaks all conventions, cliches, that we have gotten used to. The only issue that I felt was the element of melodrama towards the end, for a wonderfully understated movie , the end was bit too on your face. But that has been an issue with most of the mainstream films in India and surprisingly those are bits that work the some of our audience.
And seeing your interview, I felt you enjoyed the portions involving the cops (could be due to tamil dialogues), more than malayali critics/audience. I thought that would be a distraction from the core love story, but it did not. And in the latter hal,f in particular, blended really well with the love tale.
Lastly, I feel, films like Mayanadhi, courtesy its impeccable craft , detailing and updated writing make the plot of the film irrelevant. If you think of it, there is no big plot in Mayanadhi, the conflict that keeps both lovers away from each other, is a bit too trivial for an intense love story film, yet the film works wonderfully well.
Also would like to know your take on Interval Block, i feel it is the best I have seen this year. A point, which almost all the critics have missed.

Such a wonderful review. Just now saw the movie. I recently read these words on a book cover “devastatingly beautiful”. This movie fell into that category for me. There is pain and gloom along with so much delicate beauty. That love making scene felt real as you aptly put un-cinematic.The rooted and real life like images in the beginning gives way for something mythical and larger than life in the end and the film indeed transcends into mystical river.

The film Mayanadhi is a good attempt but seemingly much overrated (not this review per se, but generally). It seems it had become a recent trend to praise even just above average stuffs (which follows some pattern like a character study) to the skies and to zealously overanalyze what may be at best called ‘tidbits'(thus making mountains out of a molehill). 🙂

Aashiq Abu has always been an interesting film maker and better actor than a film maker, but his activism mostly overshadows his craft( not necessarily in his films, but especially his persona online). He was one of the early film makers successfully marketed malayalam films through social media and over the years every other film maker started thanking various social media friends and followers. He always had haters first for proximity with Mammootty and there was this rumor that he used to run a orkut community named I hate Mohanlal back then. Over the years various issues like him not liking Viswaroopam and his pro-feminist, communist activism etc has fair share of haters. Idukki Gold ( one of his better films) earned him a pro-weed status. And the hatred is now coming a full circle with Mammootty fans hating on him and asking to boycott Mayaanadhi for his wife is friends with feminist Parvathi. Weirdly all the hatred some how deflects and finds his way to him, funniest was that Mohanlal/Mammootty comparison in Maheshinte Prathikaaram earned no haters for Dileesh Pothan, but Aashiq Abu for he was the producer of the film. As someone said biggest contribution of Aashiq Abu and the likes is taking the malayalam cinema out of savarna varikkasseri mana’s feudal set ups and slangs ( Which he made fun of in the salt n pepper where Pothan played the caricature of pro-feudal film maker). Now malayalam cinema is out on the streets and bi-lanes of Ernakulam, Fort Kochi, Angamaly, Aluva, Trivandrum, even Kasargode and everywhere.
P.S : Yet to watch Mayaanadhi, hence all this bit of recent history.

As a Tamilian, the only Malayalam films I’ve watched are the light-hearted family genre ones, and Premam. Hopefully this’ll give me a fresh start. Characters sound very realistic, interesting.

If this was any other movie, I would agree with you about the “sex is not a promise” line. In any other movie, it would be delivered as a huge emotional moment, designed to show how progressive the movie is. However in this movie, it is delivered almost as an aside, a quiet statement that isn’t stressed upon. Effective, understated, but painful.

Good review for a more than good movie. The sensibility and sensitivity was far better than any recent malayalam movie. I liked all the characters and their mannerisms in the movie, which is quite difficult to achieve. Shyam needs a special mention for the detailing.
I have become a fan of Unnimaya Prasad. How easily does she slip into different roles from a grumpy wife to a kind-hearted teacher and now to an associate director. Soubin was terrific, from thunderous claps to pin drop silence. Casting was superb.

the whole controversy around parvathy and calls for boycotting Mayaanadhi is the kind of black comedy, that if shown in a film , would have been easily dismissed as Far fetched and incredible 🙂 . now the word on the street is ,that Dulqar salman has opted out Kammatipadam sequel because Director Rajeev Ravi is the husband of Geethu mohandas who instigated Parvathy to take the name of Kasaba and Mammootty
Now malayalam cinema is out on the streets and bi-lanes of Ernakulam, Fort Kochi, Angamaly, Aluva, Trivandrum, even Kasargode and everywhere.
Actually, it was there before as well, directors like IV Sasi, Bharathan, Padmarajan etc have all gone to different parts of the state, but its in the mid 90’s that malayalam cinema got confined to varikkaseri mana and the ottappalm regions , most probably after Devasuram.. Just to expand on that , the new gen’s contribution is there in diversity in casting of actors as well, up until their time, the actors were only from 2 or 3 communities

Mayanadhi a remake of Godard’s Breathless.
Breathless synopsis :
Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a youthful dangerous criminal who is intrigued with the film persona of Humphrey Bogart. After stealing a car in Marseille, Michel shoots and kills a policeman who has followed him onto a country road. Penniless and on the run from the police, he turns to an American love interest Patricia (Jean Seberg), a student and aspiring journalist, who sells the New York Herald Tribune on the streets of Paris. The ambivalent Patricia unwittingly hides him in her apartment as he simultaneously tries to seduce her and call in a loan to fund their escape to Italy. Patricia says she is pregnant, probably with Michel’s child. She learns that Michel is on the run when questioned by the police. Eventually she betrays him, but before the police arrive she tells Michel what she has done. He is somewhat resigned to a life in prison, and does not try to escape at first. The police shoot him in the street and, after a prolonged death run, he dies “à bout de souffle” (out of breath).

Is there a possibility that all this could be Mathans ( Tovino ) dream ? Im not sure if i remember exactly but he does travel in a bus to thrissur so that he could sleep and there wasn’t any follow up after that.

I read another perspective review of this movie.It depicts the climax of mayanadhi as the begining…ie mathan is not real
But what is really mayanadhi?…I have seen it as a magical love story but is there something else in this flick…something supernatural

I totally do not recall anything about a bus to Thrissur, only that voice over in the beginning about the dream of having a house, a girl, a dog and a bathtub. I’ll have to see the movie once more now.
Why did you feel there was an element of the supernatural? Except for the penultimate scene where the heroines image morphs into the movie scene.

There are articles that give a new twist to this movie. According to these, the killing of Maathan takes place first, and it’s his ghost that hangs around Aparna, trying to help her career. That all the scenes in the movie are intermingled in time, that some are flashbacks, that the narrative is not linear. Im not totally convinced though, I seem to have missed all that. Ill have to see it once more, for sure, now.

“മായനദി” കണ്ട പ്രേക്ഷകരില് പലരും ചോദിച്ച ചോദ്യങ്ങളില് ഒന്നാണ് ഈ ചിത്രവും പേരും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധം എന്താണ് എന്നത്. പ്രേക്ഷകരില് എത്ര പേര് ഈ ചിത്രത്തെ ശരിയായ വിധത്തില് ഗ്രഹിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്ന് ഉറപ്പ് വരുതാനാകില്ല. ഒട്ടേറെ സംശയങ്ങള് മനസ്സില് അവശേഷിപ്പിച്ച് കൊണ്ടുതന്നെയാണ് ചിത്രം അവസാനിക്കുന്നതും. ഒരുപക്ഷേ ആഷിക് അബു എന്ന സംവിധായകനുമായി എന്നിലെ പ്രേക്ഷകന് നേരിട്ട് ആശയവിനിമയം നടത്തിക്കഴിഞ്ഞ ശേഷം മാത്രമാണ് സിനിമയുടെ യഥാര്ത്ഥ മൂല്യം പൂര്ണമായി ഉള്ക്കൊള്ളാന് കഴിഞ്ഞത്. കൂടുതല് ഗ്രഹിക്കാനായി സിനിമ വീണ്ടും കാണുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഒരുപക്ഷേ ഈ വര്ഷത്തെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സൈക്കോളജിക്കല് – ഹൊറര് – ത്രില്ലര് സിനിമ ഇത് തന്നെയാണ്. പ്രണയത്തിന്റെ തീവ്രതയില് കൂടി സഞ്ചരിക്കുനതിനാല് മറ്റൊരുതരത്തില് കാണാനാണ് അധികം പ്രേക്ഷകരും ശ്രമിച്ചത് എന്ന് മാത്രം. സിനിമയുടെ സസ്പെന്സ് പുറത്ത് വിടുന്നത് ശരിയല്ല എന്നറിയാം. പക്ഷേ ഈ സിനിമയില് മറിച്ചാണ്. കഥ ഗ്രഹിക്കാന് കഴിയാത്തത് കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം ഒരു ചലച്ചിത്രവും പരാജയപ്പെടരുത് എന്നു പൂര്ണമായും ഞാന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.

ജീവിതത്തില് വളരെയധികം ക്ലേശങ്ങള് അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന അപര്ണ(ഐശ്വര്യ) എന്ന പെണ്കുട്ടിയുടെ ജീവിതതില്ക്കൂടി ചിത്രം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു. പഠിച്ചിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് മാത്തന്(ടോവിനോ) എന്ന അനാഥനായ യുവാവുമായി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന തീവ്രമായ അനുരാഗം വിശ്വസനീയമായ തെറ്റിദ്ധാരണകള് മൂലം അവസാനിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പ്രാരാബ്ധങ്ങള്ക്കിടയില് ജീവിതം തള്ളിനീക്കുന്ന അപര്ണയുടെ മനസ്സിന്റെ ഒരു കോണില് മാത്തനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഓര്മ്മകള് അവള് പോലും അറിയാതെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്നു.
തുടര്ന്ന് അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി മാത്തന്റെ ഫോണ് കോള് അപര്ണക്ക് വരുന്നതോടെ കഥയുടെ ഗതി തന്നെ മാറുന്നു. തെറ്റിദ്ധാരണകള് നിലനില്ക്കുന്നതിനാല് ബന്ധം തുടരാന് കഴിയില്ല എന്ന് തുറന്നു പറയുന്നു എങ്കിലും പൂര്വാധികം തീവ്രമായ പ്രണയത്തോടെ അവള് അവനിലേക്ക് അടുക്കുന്നു. നടി ആകണം എന്ന അവളുടെ ആഗ്രഹം നേടിയെടുക്കാന് അവളെ പല ഘട്ടങ്ങളിലും സഹായിക്കുന്നത് മാത്തനാണ്. അപ്പോഴും മാത്തന്റെ പൂര്വകാലം മനസ്സിലാക്കാന് അവള് ശ്രമിക്കുന്നില്ല.
ചെറിയ കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങളില് ഏര്പ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന മാത്തന് യാദൃശ്ചികമായി ഒരു പോലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുകയും കുറച്ചു പണവുമായി രക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന സത്യം അപര്ണ തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നില്ല. സ്ഥിരമായി ഒരു മൊബൈല് ഫോണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കാത്ത മാത്തനെ കണ്ടെത്താനുള്ള പോലീസിന്റെ ഏക മാര്ഗ്ഗം അപര്ണ മാത്രമായിരുന്നു. അപര്ണയിലൂടെ മാത്തനെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്ന പോലീസ് അവനെ കോടതിയുടെ ദാക്ഷിണ്യത്തിനു വിട്ടു നല്കാതെ വധിക്കുന്നു. മാത്തനെ പോലീസ് വധിച്ചത് അപര്ണ ഉള്പ്പടെയുള്ള പൊതു സമൂഹം അറിയുന്നില്ല. ഒട്ടേറെ ആഗ്രഹിച്ച കരിയര് അപര്ണയ്ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുമ്പോഴും മാത്തന്റെ തിരിച്ചു വരവിനായി അപര്ണ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നിടത്ത് ചിത്രം അവസാനിക്കുകയാണ്.

യഥാര്ത്ഥ കഥ
മായാനദി എന്ന പേരില് തന്നെയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കവും ഒടുക്കവും എല്ലാം. ജീവിതത്തില് വളരെയധികം ക്ലേശങ്ങള് അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന അപര്ണ(ഐശ്വര്യ) എന്ന പെണ്കുട്ടി കാണുന്ന മായക്കാഴ്ചകളില് കൂടി ചിത്രം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു. കരിയറില് ഉയര്ച്ച ഉണ്ടാകാതെ ക്ലേശങ്ങള് അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന അപര്ണ തന്റെ സുഹൃത്തും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന നടിയുമായ സമീറയുടെ ഫ്ലാറ്റിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു. അല്പ സമയത്തിന് ശേഷം അവിടെ എത്തുന്ന സമീറ തനിക്ക് ലഭിച്ച ഒരു ഗിഫ്റ്റ് ഓപ്പണ് ചെയ്യാന് അപര്ണയുടെയും സുഹൃത്തിന്റെയും സഹായം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു. ഒരുപക്ഷെ ഇതായിരുന്നു സിനിമയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള സീന്.
ഗിഫ്റ്റ് ഓപ്പണ് ചെയ്യുമ്പോള് കീറിയെറിഞ്ഞ പത്രക്കടലാസില് ഉള്ള ഒരു വാര്ത്ത കുറച്ചു നേരത്തേക്ക് ക്യാമറ ഒപ്പിയെടുക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പലരും കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലാത്ത ആ സീനില് കാണിക്കുന്നത് സ്വീകരിക്കാന് ആളില്ലാതെ മോര്ച്ചറിയില് ഉള്ള മാത്തനെയാണ്. മാത്തന്റെ പോക്കറ്റില് നിന്നും ലഭിച്ച പഴയകാല ഫോട്ടോ നല്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.(പിന്നീട് സമീറ മടങ്ങി പോകുന്നതിന് മുന്പത്തെ രാത്രി അപര്ണ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളോട് മാത്തനെ പറ്റി വിവരിക്കുന്നത് ഈ ഫോട്ടോ കാട്ടിയാണ്.) ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ആരംഭാവസ്ഥയില് തന്നെ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞ മാത്തനെയാണ് പിന്നീട് അപര്ണ കാണുന്നതും സംസാരിക്കുന്നതും. മരിക്കുന്നതിന് മുന്പുള്ള മാത്തന്റെ അവസാന ആഗ്രഹം അപര്ണയുടെ സക്സസ്ഫുള് കരിയര് മാത്രം ആയിരുന്നു. അപര്ണക്ക് ഒപ്പം ചേര്ന്ന് അവളുടെ ആഗ്രഹങ്ങള് നേടിയെടുക്കാന് സഹായിച്ച ആത്മാവിനെയാണ് പ്രേക്ഷകന് ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതും പോലീസ് തേടുന്നതുമായ കാമുകനായി തെറ്റിദ്ധരിച്ചത്.

ചിത്രത്തിലെ സീനുകള് മറ്റൊരു ഓര്ഡറില് ചിന്തിച്ചാല് തീരുന്ന പ്രശ്നം മാത്രമേ ഉള്ളു. പോലീസില് നിന്നും മാത്തനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള വിവരങ്ങള് തിരിച്ചരിയുന്ന അപര്ണ മാത്തന് തന്നെ വഞ്ചിച്ചു എന്ന് ഉറച്ചു വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. അവനെ റെസ്റ്റോറന്റ് ലേക്ക് (McDonald’s)ക്ഷണിച്ചുവരുത്തി പോലീസ് അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നു. കോടതിയില് എത്താതെ മാത്തനെ പോലീസ് എന്കൌണ്ടര് ചെയ്യുന്നു.
കുറച്ചു ദിവസങ്ങള്ക്ക് ശേഷമാണ് അപര്ണ സമീറയുടെ ഫ്ലാറ്റില് എത്തുന്നത്. അവിടെയെത്തിയ പത്രത്തില് മാത്തന്റെ മരണ വാര്ത്ത കാണിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. തുടര്ന്ന് ഫോണില് മാത്തന്റെ കോള് വരികയും അപര്ണയുമായി അടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. പലപ്പോഴും ആത്മവിശ്വാസം നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന അപര്ണയെ മാത്തന് സഹായിക്കുന്നു. ഓഡിഷന് ശേഷവും സിനിമയിലെ വേഷം നഷ്ടപ്പെടാന് പോകുന്നു എന്ന് തോന്നുന്ന ഘട്ടത്തില് സമീറയുടെ ജീവിതത്തില് പ്രശ്നങ്ങള് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നതും മാത്തന്റെ ആത്മാവാണ്.. അപര്ണയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം പൂര്ത്തിയാക്കിയ ശേഷം മാത്തന്റെ ആത്മാവ് അവളെ തേടി എത്തുന്നില്ല. മാത്തന് കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടത് അറിയാതെ അപര്ണ അവനെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നിടത്ത് ചിത്രം പൂര്ത്തിയാകുന്നു.

മാത്തനെ അപര്ണയുടെ സഹോദരിയും അമ്മയും കാണുന്ന സീനുകള് ചിത്രത്തില് ഉണ്ട്. പക്ഷേ സൂക്ഷിച്ചു നോക്കിയാല് അത് രണ്ടു കാലഘട്ടം ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന് കാണാം. ഉദാഹരണമായി സഹോദരി മാത്തനെ കാണുമ്പോള് അവര് ഗര്ഭിണി അല്ല. അപര്ണ മാത്തനെ മുന്പ് പ്രണയിച്ചിരുന്നപ്പോള് ഉള്ള സീനുകള് ആണ് അവ. (ചുംബന സീന് പോലെയുള്ള ഒരു ഫ്ലാഷ് ബാക്ക്). പിന്നീട് സെറ്റില് ആകാന് സഹോദരി പറയുന്ന സമയത്ത് അവര് മാത്തനെ കാണുന്നില്ല. അപ്പോള് ഗര്ഭിണി ആണ്. അപര്ണ പറഞ്ഞ വിവരങ്ങള് വെച്ചാണ് സഹോദരി ഉപദേശം നല്കുന്നത്.
അപര്ണയുടെ വീട്ടില് വെച്ച് മാത്തനെ അപര്ണയുടെ അമ്മ കാണുന്നുണ്ട്. അതും കുറെ കാലം മുന്പുള്ള ഫ്ലാഷ്ബാക്ക് ആണ്. അപര്ണയുടെ വീട് കാണിക്കുന്ന സീന് ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചാല് വ്യക്തമാകും. ഡോക്ടര് പ്രാക്റ്റീസ് ചെയ്യുന്ന റൂം, കലണ്ടര്, etc. മാത്തന്റെ കഥാപാത്രം ആശാന് എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തെ കാണുന്ന സീനുകളും കൊല്ലപ്പെടുന്നതിന് മുന്പ് ആണ്.

ഇത്ര മനോഹരമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ച ഒരു ഹൊറര് സിനിമ ഈ അടുത്തകാലത്ത് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല എന്ന് വേണം കരുതാന്. മായാനദി എന്ന നാമത്തിന്റെ അര്ഥം തന്നെയാണ് ഇതിന് സിനിമയുമായി ഉള്ള ബന്ധം. മായക്കാഴ്ചകളുടെ നദി തന്നെയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രം. കണ്ടാലും കണ്ടാലും മതിവരാത്ത, അവസാനിക്കാത്ത

I feel this alternate interpretation that is floating around is just some guy/girl’s imagination gone wild.
I prefer the move as I saw it – the alternate interpretation has just poured the contents of the movie on to the sixth-sense/talaash/aparichitan(mammootty starrer) cast.

The River that keeps on working its magic. Mayaanadhi is now out on DVD
My theatrical viewing experience of the film wasn’t a pleasant one , to put it mildly, due to a lot of reasons. so watching it again on home video after 5 or 6 months only increased the pleasure. i liked it much much more this time. i think there is something about these dreamy , slow paced, romantic films that work very well when we watch it all alone in the comfort of our home video than in a public space like a movie theater with a lot of people. Another thing is about the film projection, which is terrible in a lot of our theaters, On DVD , the colors are so sharp and vibrant and give us the full extend of the frame compositions . its just glorious, the way Apu’s costumes are coordinated with the background colors, the contrast between the indoor and outdoor shots, the night and day shots , just extraordinary. this has to be one of the most visually beautiful films i have seen recently in any language
To take the basic plot form Godard’s Breathless and develop it in a completely different way is commendable. Breathless was the film that ushered in the new wave movement with its avant garde style consisting of fractured narrative techniques, jump cuts and post modernisms. here Mayaaanadhi goes beyond or rather before that kind of cinema to make a purely classical film more suited to the time of silent era. somehow F.W. Murnau’s classic Sunrise came to mind while watching this film
the lead pair of the film Mathan and Apu(Aparna) are very similair to the star crossed lovers like Romeo and Juliet. its interesting to see the recurring image of Mathan keep calling apu on phone from under the balcony of her apartment ala romeo ,and the film has a tragic ending
There has been a lot of speculations about the theme of the film, whether this is a work of romanticism or magic realism , what with theories floating around about the character of mathan being a ghost and the entire film is a fantasy told from Apu’s POV, but i would like to go with the literal narrative presented in the film , as a work in Romanticism akin to the works of padmarajan like thoovanathumbikal or innale, which is referenced in this film
I think the title refers to an invisible river that seems to separate mathan and Apu at all times
As seen in the final moments, Apu is this unattainable image existing in a faraway fantasy land across the magic river, a river he will never be able to cross.
Nothing in Ashiq Abu’s filmography prepared me for this. A compulsory viewing for all avid movie fans

The Malayalam article which tonks has shared makes reference to the picture that was shown to Sameera and Darshana while telling his back story. Tovino in that picture is far too young, probably like a teenager, so probably that picture is about the news of his family’s death and not about his death.

@brangan Finally watched this beautiful movie. Kept me thinking about this movie all through the night. Love potion – Sweet Poison.
Also, I was telling it to myself “Gautham Menon! Are you taking notes?”. The action sub-genre neatly packaged inside a Romance. Like you can call this one as “Satendru Maarudhu Vaanilai” which was the working title of Accham Yenbadhu Madamayada

Just watched the movie.The ending where Maathan gets shot and he sees Appu across the river just before he dies has been done beautifully. The river, the woods , the breeze, the BGM …..all of it has come together beautifully in that scene .
I kept wondering what the point of the whole movie was? Read MANK’s comments and the line “Apu is this unattainable image existing in a faraway fantasy land across the magic river, a river he will never be able to cross.”…….has tied up the whole point of that scene and the movie for me.
Movies like these are precisely the reason I stopped watching Hollywood films. They make a lot of movies on losers and loners with pointless , depressing lives who meets heart-wrencingly sad ends. It just sucks the joy out of you . A nice Bollywood musical is what I need right now.
