This is the worst program in the whole of FC right now, this guy isn’t even half-funny.

It was quite hilarious! 🙂 Jagan is a funny comedian.
If he were to do a version of HONEST TRAILERS of older movies, I am sure that would be good as well.

I love the idea behind this series. Also this episode is much funnier than the first one.

Hi Rangan! I wanted to comment on the first video but I held myself back since I didn’t want to be scathing.
It’s good to see that Film Companion is experimenting with content. I can also see that the idea behind these videos is to be goofy. But it’s not working. I can’t even give an A for effort. It’s more like I can give a C for thought and that too because I feel for the poor child FC, who’s doing other stuff very well.
There are multiple problems. The biggest problem is that this guy isn’t funny. His lines are irritating rather. I don’t know how else to say this.
The big question is whether this is the kind of content I expect from Film Companion. I personally don’t. There are tons of unfunny Tamil Youtube channels out there who’re doing such stuff. I don’t want FC also doing it. If at all FC attempts humour it ought to show other channels how it’s done. This video is more like FC is trying to ape Put Chutney and competing with it in a race to be unfunnier! Why? Let FC be FC!
Also FC is the kind of place where I would expect to see a thought provoking piece on Thankar Bachchan’s cinema, not brainless jabs at him and his work. I don’t need FC to tell me jokes like Prabhu Deva doesn’t appear in a single film without a beard. I’m not saying I’m offended by this video or that some filmmakers shouldn’t be made fun of. Make fun of them such that it’s funny. A filmmaker who made Azhagi doesn’t deserve this kind of video and that too from Film Companion.

I have to agree with Ramchander. This guy just isn’t all that funny. I may have smiled a few times while watching the videos, but that’s about it. I’m hoping things get better with time.
Also, BR, I have to ask: Is there a reason you omitted Aramm from your year-end analysis? I ask this because you were quite appreciative of many aspects of the film (even if it didn’t work as a whole).
Also, it’s been nearly a year since FC South came into existence. And yet, the number of reviews for Telugu and Kannada films can be counted on two hands. Why is this so? Isn’t it about time Telugu, Kannada and even Malayalam had their own reviewers so as to cover the wide number of releases across the four states? I apologise if I come across as combative in my tone, but I really hope the people at FC South are working to remedy the situation.

That was hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed it – particularly enjoyed the bits about Villu and the last joke about title and story.
Your critic alerts are also very well done. Much better than episode #1.
Happy New Year!

Ramchander: Regarding “A filmmaker who made Azhagi doesn’t deserve this kind of video and that too from Film Companion”, er why not? Genuinely curious. It is after all comedy. I can understand if you didn’t find it funny…
Here is K Balakumar on Mani Ratnam which I found funny.

This was really funny – every time Jagan says Thankar Bachan, it was really funny. Villu reference was brilliant.

‘Thankar Bachan’ just has a funny ring to it. ‘Thankar Bachan’ is gonna be my default reply to everything from now.
“Why did you skip lunch?”
“Thankar Bachan”
“Pizza or burger?”
“Thankar Bachan”
To all shovelling shit onto Jagan – I think it’s a new format and he’ll get better with time. Also, no one’s too big to not be ridiculed by a stand up comedian.

Oh for God’s sake! People here griping about the video need to chill the fuck out! I found it funny but I get that humor is subjective. And for those suggesting Thankar Bachan doesn’t deserve this ridicule, a pompous ass who likened actresses to prostitutes deserves ridicule at the very least.
Although I must applaud the confidence of a producer who thinks a Thankar Bachan directed movie featuring 2 leads who haven’t headlined a movie in ages is potential box-office gold.

I completely agree with Ramchander except I don’t find Put Chutney as unfunny as he does and I don’t agree with the sentiment that the man who made Azhagi deserves better.
For the most part I kept thinking “Am I missing something?” and “Seriously?”
The concept works as a lunchtime game among a bunch of friends, like “Let us all watch the latest trailer and come up with the silliest story around it” – kind of thing. But it does not transcend that small circle goofiness.

Is Thankar Bachan related to Amitabh Bachchan? I’d love to hear Amitabh say ‘Thankar Bachan’ in his baritone.
I don’t think the concept/format is lame. It’s actually brilliant and difficult to pull off. It’s not just about coming up with a story by watching a trailer, but it has to be filled with pop culture references, jokes and multiple characters; in short, the writing is much more difficult than it looks and the editing too looks tricky. Also, all these characters have to be enacted and pulled off. Maybe this video looks a bit rough on the edges because they’ve just begun making it – over time I’m sure the videos will get better.
As regards FC only doing serious stuff – have you seen that FC north interview with tape recorders? Also, ‘Whose Plot Is It Anyway’ is a format that can be used to give insights – while guessing the plot of a movie the host looks at the filmography of the directors/actors involved for the same and that introduces the viewer to new stuff. For one, I’d have never known about Thankar Bachan and his kinda movies without this video.

@babablacksheep, the Tamil spelling of his name seems to indicate it’s pronounced Thankar Bachchaan (rhyming with machaan).
The way Jagan just says Thankar Bachan as a catch-all phrase to explain the movie is quite amazing! It works very well as a hook too. 🙂
