Through the first half of Kalakalappu 2, I kept glancing at the time. 30 minutes in, and we’ve just had one weak stab at a joke. It’s when Jiiva calls out to his dog, named Sugar. And Jai asks, “Sweet dog aa. Naai ku Sugar nu paer vechirukkeenga?” (This is so not worth translating.) A little later, when Sathish is accused of sending a woman a phone message, he asks, “En handwriting la irundhudha?” (See note about translation above.) At the one-hour mark, we get a boob joke, playing on the word “pazham.” The audience laughed. As for me, the only smile came from imagining the circumstances that led to Sathish having Catherine Tresa for a sister. I recalled what Jagan, cast as Tamannah’s brother in Ayan, said: “Amma paal, appa decoction.”

I don’t see a star rating there. Did you stop giving them?

#ASKBR:
BR,
Quotes from the review:
1) “We go to his films for easy laughs”
2) “I began to wonder if Sundar C. had lost his touch. The second half, thankfully, picks up”
Akin to the second-half of this movie — even though I get from the review that this one is not as funnier — , I really liked the second half of Kalakalappu 1 (especially post the arrival of one Mr.N.Santhanam). Now, how would you compare the 1.5 stars of this one with Mr.Sundar’s yester year blockbusters, like for example a ‘Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga’ or the much beloved ‘Ullaththai Alliththaa’? I am just curious. What would be your star ratings for these two movies?

@shawiswa why, what’s wrong? He has his own production house, and has done reasonably well in the recent past.
He was going to make the most expensive Tamil movie ever, btw (before the producers went a different way to burn their money).

praneshp – his last few films have been downright horrible.

@shaviswa: I’d say only Aranmanai 2 was horrible. Most people on this blog will disagree that they were great movies, but Aranmanai and Aambala were quite popular.

“Best of all, Shiva is back in cracking form, making lines that sound flat on paper (“Naan kaaki sattai potta katatumirandi”) seem far funnier. ”
I haven’t watched the movie, if I do, I will probably skip to Shiva’s portions directly. He is one of the very, very few comedians in Tamil cinema that I can tolerate these days. In fact, I really like his style of “mokkai” comedy and dialogue delivery and the fact that his comedy is not based on making fun of other people/women(panni thalaiya, noodles thalaiya, chappa figaru nee pesariya etc. etc. nonsense in the name of comedy). I enjoyed his Sonna Puriyathu movie quite a lot.

the only line i can write having good, sundar c, movie would be the one that has Anbe Sivam in the same line.
was it ghost directed by Kamal? Kalakalapu 1 was quite fun though as filmy as our movie can get. the kind of hilarity created between Santhanam and Mano bala was too good.

WOW!! @Naveen – Never knew that Anbe Sivam was directed by Sundar C. Clearly, it looks like ghost directed.

Loving the shiva love here. He cracks me up effortlessly. I think a huge part of why I like him is because of Tamil Padam. Wonder what happened to that director.

Awesome. I loved Tamil padam and wish there were more such films that made the Tamil film world reflect upon the crap they dish out film after film. 🙂
Would love to see what CS Amudhan has to offer now.

Like Amuthan, i was looking towards the next works of Eeram director. did he deliver movies post Eeram? had high expectations on Poo Sasi too, but lost interest later.
do these directors give away all theri stuff in their first movie and struggle at the very second? eagerly awaiting Naragasuran of Karthik Narain
