One part of why the film is so entertaining is the chemistry between the old man and the young boy — the other part is that their characters have been sketched out so well.
Spoilers ahead…

You are from Kallupatti, in Virudhunagar. You raise five children, three boys and two girls. You are so committed to their well-being that you don’t get remarried after the death of your wife. One day, after the children are grown and married, one day when your hair is gone and all that’s left is a flowing white beard, you fall into a coma. You remain bedridden for months. That’s when your children decide you are better off dead. There is this custom called thalaikoothal, a kind of euthanasia for the aged. They will slather you with oil and feed you lots of coconut water and watch as your organs begin to fail, one by one.
A little quiz for the reader, now. If this is the plight of the protagonist, Karuppudurai (Mu Ramaswamy), what might be the tone of the movie that ensues? Now, add to this the plight of a second character, a young boy, an orphan named Kutty (Naga Vishal) who has been raised by a kindly priest in the premises of a temple. At one point, these two characters, at either end of the spectrum of life, meet. Again, I ask you, dear reader, what might be the tone of the ensuing movie?

There’s this little-known film called Baaram, Tamil cinema’s solitary winner at last year’s NFA, which deals with the same topic. This one sounds interesting too.

I would like to suggest a small correction, Braddy. Kedi is not a Tamil word. It is basically KD – an acronym for Known Depradator. Every police station has this particular list/file (which they call KD) that basically contains information of all known criminals in the respective neighborhood. We being the amazing folks we are somehow brought that into our day-to-day usage.

I read here that KD means Known Dacoit and curry actually is the name for pepper.

I met an urdu speaker this morning and he said ‘Parvah nahi’ when I was short of a few rupees and suddenly it stuck me that the tamil word ‘paravaa illah’ is of urdu origin. Curiously, even Kannada has absorbed the word as ‘Parvagilla’ with the same meaning, even though Kannada and Tamil split a long time before urdu’s entry into South India.

A decent film with some heart-warming moments (quite liked the late meeting with Valli, and the film role bit), but it also gets super-schmaltzy towards the end and could have been more restrained in those scenes. And yes, snipping some 20 min off would have been nice.

Watched the movie on Netflix. What a lovely movie! I couldn’t help comparing it with Muthukku Muthaga is which I absolutely hate for its emotional manipulation.
