Wow, quite surprising that he actually felt you have to incorporate readers viewpoints into your future reviews. I mean seriously? Let’s suppose for a minute that it is ideal, even then it wouldn’t be practical.

Madan – I think what he means is when someone gives a different pov or reading which may be valid and missed by BR, maybe he can have that in mind while reviewing a similar movie next time. I’m assuming.
I think the question were good and different from the usual ‘how are you so good at English’ stuff.

Oh man, some really awful questions. Nevertheless, Brangan soldiered on bravely. It’s always a pleasure to listen to you boss.

Kay : I got what he meant and it is neither practical nor desirable. A critic can let himself be influenced say by the conversations on this blog. Or the writing of another critic. But to take specific feedback into account for similar films in future is very difficult. That’s like forcing yourself to not watch the film in the way you normally would. Anything that interferes with the critic’s honest reaction to a movie is undesirable.

though you did not agree to the point raised about allowing feedback affect the way you see a movie, I did see a change in how you reviewed movies post the Madras review where you missed to see the caste conflict undertones. You have made a point to raise that aspect in your reviews since then.
It is not a bad thing per se. Actually quite natural that you evolve with feedback and get better.

shaviswa: I agree with the general idea that feedback helps. But WRT caste, I don’t know. If a MADRAS came out today, I can’t say for sure that I will see it as a “caste” movie (unlike say, a KAALA or a PARIYERUM where it’s much more overt and INSIDE the movie and not just symbolic.
You have made a point to raise that aspect in your reviews since then.
That is only in the films that were very obviously about oppression, and you could not help mentioning the caste element.
Otherwise, this review came long before MADRAS, and I have written about the Dalit element.
“In an excellent scene that rewards those with the patience for serve-and-volley rhetoric, Deepak, a Dalit, is pulled up by Prabhakar for causing a scene, siding with Dalits celebrating the Mandal Commission’s recommendations for reservation”
“Even later, Jha stages a small scene where upper-class (and also upper-caste) men visit Prabhakar after he succeeds in coaching children towards results better than his rival’s and ask him if he can conduct separate classes for their children, who will not sit with these Dalits…”
