Sorry to say, but that was the least exciting interview you’ve done with GVM. (And you probably knew / felt it too)

Caesium: Haha, why “sorry” and all? If it did not work for you, it did not. That’s all.
We had planned a back-to-back two-parter, with this being a generic “20 years journey” thing and a more specific one the following day. But due to scheduling logistics, that’s been pushed to next week.
Hope at least that one works for you 😛

GVM is the go-to director for BR when nobody else is available 🙂

I enjoyed this interview. I had a feeling this interview would happen when his other interviews around the anniversary theme began appearing in my youtube feed. for what it’s worth, I hope the man gets to make the films that he wants to make for the next 20 years and beyond 🙂

I always assumed that BR was the go-to media person for GVM if no one was paying attention to him 😉

I would like to know why his movies are facing delays. He did throw light on mistakes being made as a producer but even the ones he is directing and not producing are taking years to see the light. Is it because of him handling multiple projects together or is it a deliberate attempt? Also, he has said in multiple interviews that he waits to see how the movie is shaping up before writing the final 20%. I don’t think this has worked recently, his endings have been tone-deaf, to say the least. Would really like to know if he is reconsidering his techniques.

If I recall correctly (back from my blog lurking days), I think GVM waded into a comments section discussion in BR’s blog some years ago right?

Ganesan Kandasamy: Yeah, this is a lot later than we wanted. But I was covering the Rotterdam festival and then Kerala happened, and this got pushed. But we did a two-parter, and if you like his work, I think you will like what we have coming up next week 🙂
PS: Earlier, I used to worry whether views/engagement would be hit if a filmmaker gives too many interviews at the same time and FOR the same occasion (a film’s release, or an anniversary in this case).
But now I think each channel has its own followers, and we get the views regardless (even if the numbers are less than they would have been had it been an ‘exclusive’).

what has he done worthwhile to celebrate 20 years, I fail to understand. It is one thing to recognize or acknowledge 20 or 30 years of somebody like Mani who had a solid body of work vs somebody like GVM who has misfired more than hit his mark

@Yajiv Yes, several times. The recent one was in a Readers Write-in piece on Enpt.

GVM is a filmmaker who did miss the mark many times, but shines more when it comes to these intimate conversations the leads have in silence together. It is very difficult it is to create the atmosphere between a couple onscreen and making us believe they are in a relationship – more than a complex action sequence or some mindbending stuff. If not worth celebrating, GVM is a filmmaker whom you could recall for such small, contained moments.

It felt like the interview was misinterpreted from both sides, a rare case. GVM was expecting it to be a 20 yr memory trip point of view and BR was expecting to be what changed in last 20 yrs and that took GVM by surprise and the questions had to be repeated again. Just an observation.

That would be GVM’s fault. For the number of times BR has spoken to him, GVM has spoken about not just 20 years but his entire 48 years journey many times. 😉

Saar, when is part 2 coming out. I am not a huge fan of all of GVM’s films and definitely not a fan of all his interviews, but his interactions with you are always special.
Please do the needful! 🙂
