Nayattu, directed by Martin Prakkat and written by Shahi Kabir, begins with a scene that I read as a metaphor: a tug of war between two teams of men. In the middle of this, there’s a smiling politician walking about the crowd, soliciting votes. This sets up what’s going to follow because the film itself is a tug of war between what we conventionally call right and wrong. The politician is important, too, and signifies the by-elections round the corner.
We have a cop called Maniyan (Joju George). He helps frame a case against a boy who is caught with a girl whose father is a minister. Why he does this is obvious: because his higher up asked him to do it and also because he’s a father of a young girl himself. He’s proud of her and the thought that his daughter shouldn’t end up in a similar situation probably influences him. So, Maniyan frames the boy with a false case, with the rest of the film being about how karma comes back to bite.

There was another Nayattu made in the 1970s, which was a remake of Zanjeer, with Macho star Jayan reprising Amitabh Bachchan’s cop.

Hope this movie gets the deserved applause when it comes on OTT. I’m honestly very surprised by the evolution of Kunchacko Boban. For the longest time, he was the blandly nice actor who was decent, but nothing beyond that. Now, he blends into a character so naturally. People don’t go “oh what a good performance,” because it’s not showy acting, but you just connect with whatever he’s doing nowadays. For example, there’s something so organic about the way he carries himself during the Appalale song.
Everyone knows how good Joju and Nimisha already are.

BR – one request. For your video reviews, can you give your one-liner in the title like you do for your written reviews. I often decide when to read or watch your reviews (before or after I watch the movie) depending on the one liner. For instance, if the film sounds interesting from the one liner, I will wait to watch before reading your review. Also I can skim through the contents to not learn anything about the story while reading, but can’t while watching the video format. So, if you could just add that to the title, it will be super helpful. Thank you!

I’ve always liked Kunchacko Boban, right from his shy, awkward days. Along the way, he’s metamorphosed into a competent actor who is not looking to be ‘hero’. Hope to catch this on OT.

With its interesting story, credible performances, atmospheric visuals and tight editing, Nayattu is another example of the seemingly effortless manner in which the current Malayalam film industry churns out incredibly well-made entertaining movies.

It may be for the sake of avoiding extra-judicial censorship, but I love how they’ve tried to balance out the caste equations with the characters so that it’s not a blatant caste fight movie.
