Would love for you to do a piece on how very talented (male) actors from other industries are always brought in to play villain roles in Tamil films
Eg:
FaFa in Velaikkaran
Tovino in Maari 2
Nawaz in Petta
FaFa being villain in Allu Arjun’s next
Joju George in Jagame Thandhiram
With an exception being FaFa in Super Deluxe.

BR, on your question about Malayalam artists starting to move to other languages, isn’t it very different for heroes and heroines? Actresses find it easier to work in multiple industries, whereas actors are typically unable to go beyond their regions. (Nayathara, Asin, Urvashi, Shobhana, Ambika, Radha… just to name a few malayalam actresses who worked in multiple languages, and there are similar Tamil/Telugu actresses who transcended regional boundaries as well, but except for a few exceptions, regional male actors still struggle). (Space vs time – actors are constrained by space but not by time(longevity of 40 years+), whereas actresses have only a decade or so as leads, but they are unconstrained by space/regions during this time!!

” how very talented (male) actors from other industries are always brought in to play villain roles in Tamil films”.
I’m going to take a few guesses.
I am guessing Malayali actors do Tamil films bcoz they get paid better in Tamil (bigger production houses) and also for the exposure it gives them to a wider audience.
Along with the good pay, I think mallu actors are also respected a lot in Tamil industry bcoz of their talent and for the quality of films they make.
Tamil industry, on the other hand, cast actors& actresses in character /villain roles from other languages for the newness factor so that the movies don’t look stale with the same old familiar faces as villain/lead actress, etc. I think Tamil films are all about the main lead. Since the movies are mainly about hero ….the hero remains the same in all the major movies, but other side characters can easily be exchanged for whoever.
Casting a mallu/Telugu actor will also guarantee Kerala/Telugu territory audience and therefore bigger collections for the movie. Also, a lot of buzz and curiosity is created by the new casting combinations.

Great interview, very charming actor. Mayanadhi is one of my all time favourite films too, so romantic and magical. I remember you did not like the line (or felt it was jarring) “sex is not a promise” in your review of the film, BR. Have you changed your mind?
