Nice Interview.
I rewatched that bombing scene from kannathil and it is really nicely done. Much better than the battle scene in the first Viswaroopam I thought.
And yes, I totally wouldn’t have guessed that the house and catamaran were not real. I don’t know if video quality also plays a part in that but consider me successfully fooled.

BR, Thanks for the master class with RKC… Loved all those stories behind some of the most iconic films .. maybe for a part 3 you could also cover his priyadarshan phase and a bit more of his influences.. It made me go back and watch those songs…:-)

I liked this as well..hearing technicians talk about the process that goes with their craft..wonder if Sreekar prasad, Sabu cyril and the likes are on the list to talk about their stuff..and who’s up for music and music production? screenwriting as well..an area that is neglected esp. in Tamil films..
Looks like Mani has been somewhat lucky to keep having these “happy accidents” happen to him. I wonder if he almost expects some magic to happen everytime while going out to shoot. How do you plan for that, I reckon.. I would also like to hear about those frustrating days from these guys, when nothing ever goes right. It can’t always be as exciting as it comes off in these interviews

Enjoyed this set of interviews. Fascinating insight into the process. Would love to hear about what he (or other cinematographers) do in pre-production, or what they discuss with the director before shooting.
Is there a copyright issue with showing clips, hence the use of stills? Whenever he talks about camera movement, it would be nice to see clips.

Actually, a good director “makes” happy accidents happen. In the sense that when something unplanned happens, he/she is able to recognise it, process it and “use” it in a way that adds to the film.
One of the most famous “happy accidents” is the malfunctioning shark in JAWS, which Spielberg was able to convert to the film’s biggest strength.
The “happy accidents” could be with weather, actors, props, whatever… If the director is good and the team is good, it becomes a strength.
