That 2014 meetup photo led me to look for a blog post of that meetup which was here:
which then led me to a He-Man BR New Year post here:
and the comment space there, which turned out to be a, uhm, booby trap.
Is it me, or have we gotten a bit more serious these days…

@Karthik: I don’t think it’s just you 🙂 I’ve been lurking in this blog for longer than I can remember and I feel like it’s been through phases. I’ve seen heated discussions (remember a particularly memorable one from ages ago where GVM challenged long-time commenter vijay to a fight) and also A-joke filled ones like the “booby/BRA” thing you mentioned. I’m sure we’ll go through a less-serious phase again soon enough 🙂

Yeah you probably did, but it wasn’t all fun. We had some marvelously unhinged characters who livened up the discussions but frequently took it way too far. The Late Lord High Priest of Shit Stirrers, one who would froth at the mouth if B gave a positive to any Hindi movie which DIDN’T star Hrithik Roshan, another who would fly off the deep end at what he perceived was B’ “Northern Bias”. The latter 2 I believe finally tried even B’s infinite patience and got banned.
Even today you get B periodically getting called out for alleged Kamal/MR/Brahmin biases but I think this lot of commentators do it in a far more civilized manner 🙂

Yossarian : Thanks! That was, uh, quite something. Not commenting on the views of either vijay or GVM saar himself. But I remember that my cousin and his friends in Chennai were all into NBA big-time back in the 90s while in Mumbai (rather its far flung suburbs where I lived) nobody talked about any basketball player other than Jordan. I would say there was a tinge of Americophilia in Chennai already by then whereas Mumbai was still in a colonial hangover (maybe still is… you can’t unsee Gateway, VT or the BMC HQ, British Raj looks large over my city). I don’t know what the English syllabus of TN State Board or NCERT comprised of in the 90s but here we had so called dead white 19th century authors galore – Lewis Carroll, Jerome K Jerome, Kipling. Regrettably or not, it influenced my English too. I always found this difference very fascinating. In the same country, two major cities were taking their English cultural cues from different places.
Kaykay : I do remember Mr Hrithink fanboy. He was very much active when I started posting here in 2012-13 and it would be much later that he got banned.

I wasn’t here then, but many times while reading old articles from the archives, came across some really interesting commentors, who all got banned in due course.
Particularly, I recall this one person called Rameshram whose comments were truly mindboggling(!). I know he got banned but have always been curious to know what was the last straw that made BR do it.
Also, for a while, it was full on Tinder mode, IIRC, what with some people using the comments thread as a dating site 🙂

@KK so funny about the shit stirrers! Ramesh Ram [ sadly passed young] and Amrita [ who does not comment anymore] argued rambunctiously!!! here is one of the best https://baradwajrangan.wordpress.com/2010/01/30/review-rann-ishqiya/. BR had to write these generously before he banned RR: Amrita/ramesh: Oh thank heavens. It was fun and all for a while to be at the sidelines and watch two extremely articulate opponents slug it out — but enough’s enough. I was going to ask you both to stand up on the bench and write “I will not fight in class” 50 times,” but I guess that’s not needed now 🙂 Future altercations, if needed, can continue at ramesh’s (per his instructions).

“I came across this person while reading older posts. His comments and the other readers’ responses were quite fun to read, and completely mindboggling”
Voldermort, to be fair, his earliest comments, in spite of the ever present snark, actually had some interesting things to say and a unique view of films. Later on, they unfortunately got more and more mean-spirited and condescending.
“And I’ve wondered for the longest time what the last straw that made BR ban him was”
That would be this: (Warning, it ain’t pretty! His last few comments clearly show a guy losing it)
“And also why, like in good ol’ Bolly he didnt make any secret comeback with a different moniker”
The reason for that is sadly tragic. He passed away somewhere in 2013 I think.

Oct-02 7 PM (IST) is great!
BR: I think Madan’s suggestion for logistics would work, and there are a couple of ways to make this slightly easy on you:
– Everybody who sends an email to you has the same subject, (something unique like OCT02BRZOOM), that way, when you’re ready to send your zoom link you can access the “batch” of emails with a simple search
– If you would like to create a GoogleGroups for readers of your blog first, then you could reply to each email with a link to join the googlegroups, and then it would become quite simple to send the zoom link, updates, changes etc as a single email (and also leave the door open for future communication beyond the one meet)

Your book club Meet organiser must have a paid Google Workspace account then. If you have just a free Google account and set up a meeting, your meeting automatically terminates after 60 mminutes. Google instituted this rule starting in July this year, I believe. This also happened to me just two weeks ago while setting up a call.

Don’t think I can make this today (Saturday) unfortunately. Something pressing came up. Please enjoy in my stead. Hopefully, this becomes a semi-regular thing. Will join in the next one.

@BR would it be too much to record it and make it a YouTube video? (For those who cannot make it, maybe)

A great meet and lovely to now put a face to many of the commenters here, thanks for organizing this, B!
A comment on this jit.si: Can’t say I’m overly impressed. Video was lagging most of the time and the audio got steadily worse. For the next meet (and I hope there is), let me see if I can set up a google meet, as my wife sets it up for our book club and it’s also unlimited with better audio/video quality. Yajiv, not sure why but she’s sure she hasn’t paid for any subscription:-) She also does her online tuition on that.
Until the next time, stay healthy and safe!

That was a nice meeting. We should do this more often.
(PS: Hope you invite Karthik Srinivasan from milliblog.com to one of them. That would be a wonderful combination.)

(Not sure how my last comment disappeared. BR, please don’t post this if it’s a duplication)
Thanks Jayram. It was a pleasure catching up with all the familiar names from this beloved corner of the internet.
Thanks everyone, especially for all your kind wishes. It was an evening well spent despite the technical glitches. Hopefully we can do this say, every other month? And with a loosely defined topic or theme, if possible?

+1 on downvoting Jitsi. I have a premium Zoom account. Happy to setup the meeting for the next meet, whenever that is scheduled. It was fun yesterday. Thanks guys!

Thanks guys…yes, as KayKay said, wonderful to put a face to the name. Especially THE Name. 😉 I hope next time we will get to hear more from Amitabh Bachchan aka Aman Basha and the other ‘new’ regulars. The discussion on Sarpatta Parambarai was terrific albeit I was clueless about it having not seen the film yet. It was like a microcosm of the blog threads transposed onto the video call format.
Venky: Would be brilliant if you are able to use the premium Zoom account!

I absolutely hate Jitsi. Most people who joined late I think had a hard time with it and I could only hear snippets about No Time To Die and something about BR forwarding Madan’s music book to Westland. Worst of all, I couldn’t figure who was who in the end. Looking forward to the video.
@Madan: “Amitabh Bachchan”-This is a first. Wonder how though?

Nice meeting and putting a few faces & voices to texts. Thanks BR
BR, by any chance, have you reviewed “Lift”? I found it pretty decent & well-made. Look forward to your views.

Aman Basha: Pretty simple, I just initialed your name and re-expanded it to that of someone else who shares those initials. 😉
I could see mostly everyone whose video was one and by scrolling up to their ‘box’ in the grid, could see their name as well. Didn’t know it was horrible for many others. There were a few patches when the audio went out or the video of the person speaking froze but the rest of it was fine. Am sure a Premium Zoom account will be far better, no question.

Good day, Mr Rangan!
I so, so wanted to be a part of this fans/followers meet, but couldn’t do so owing to my current, punishing schedule – work and otherwise. Feel really dejected that I couldn’t!
Hope the meet-up went on well, and you all had a blast catching up after years together. I shall try my best to be there for the next – as and when you schedule it.
Ever your co-passenger,
Chokkapan S

I couldnt attend as well due to some last minute thing came up. Could this be like a quarterly or biannual event instead, please? so that it’s not so punishing for those who couldn’t make it

Thank you BR for spending your valuable time. Really shows the humility on your part.
A specific topic/theme would be good for future meetups and I am thinking BR can be Solomon pappaih while Raja (KK) and bharathi Bhaskar (Iswarya), along with other members can debate.

Thank you, BR and everyone, for your time… it was nice putting a face and voice to everyone. I quite enjoyed it though I wasn’t on for most of it.
@Aman plus one on platform grievances. Do you want to split from the mother party and start Aman BR Rasigar Mandram? We can have more frequent meetings in a friendlier platform.
As Iswarya or Rahini commented, we missed the women of BR blog.
