VP is like Sanjay Gupta for Tamil films, but with a streak of humor. Right from Saroja, a lot of what he did is heavily borrowed from various sources. But looks like all that Hollywood film watching has finally lead to an interesting brainwave in this film after many years. Wonder if he will keep this up..

@vijay, Saroja is borrowed from Hollywood? I haven’t seen Biriyani and Mass but his other films are mostly original no? I think we should be fair to filmmakers and not call everything “‘copy” unless it is a blatant frame-for-frame copy. The Tamil audience being what it is, they get to do these “advanced genres” only after other industries have already tried them. Unless they are doing a hack job, the film should be treated as original.
VP is an acceptable “urban” filmmaker I think, sort of the antidote to GVM’s “‘Peter” urban. The films are a fun watch when he is firing on all cylinders (which is admittedly a coin toss).
Maanadu has to be Venkat Prabhu’s best film (and one of the best time related thrillers I’ve seen) and I don’t expect that his next few films are going to be nearly as good. But he has shown where his ceiling is, and I am happy that the movie is doing well. More like this please!

Such a wonderful interview. In fact, this was more like a discussion between two film buffs.
Thanks for this – wonderful insight into how this film was written and made.
