The only composition of his that I am very familiar with is Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki’s “Jeena Bhi Kya Hai Jeena”.

Not too familiar with his music other than some of the big hits, but I do like some of the Bappi songs I’ve heard.
“Come Closer” from Kasam Paida Karnewali Ki. Absolutely love the bass line here. Every repetition of the main bass melody is played slightly differently, which makes for a cool variation throughout.
Was on a kick a while back listening to Yesudas songs in various languages, and I came across this classical-based Bengali song composed by Bappi Lahiri:

lakshmi: What a delightfully catchy song. Thanks. 😀
Did Bappi do many Telugu films?

Yes BR, Bappi scored for many Telugu films esp. those starring Chiranjeevi. This is one of my all-time favourites from their combo.

earliest memory of his song, not knowing at that time that it was him who was the MD, quite surreal seeing this, shekar kapoor?
and in his own voice:
He was quite capable, but maybe because these were B-grade films and flopped, he took the disco route and went overboard later on.
But Inteha from Sharaabi, I heard it recently again after a long time, and it is a complete song, the buildup, Asha’s entry, the change in mood/rhythm. KK sounds like as if he was really recovering from a hangover they way he starts off. Quite situational too. You couldnt take this song and stuff it in any other film arbitrarily.

An absolutely underrated composer, who was much more than his popular songs and lifted tunes would have you believe. His Sharaabi and Namak Halaal soundtracks are sheer gold. And just as well that Rangan has pointed out that lovely song from the minor Chalte Chalte, because Bappi Lahiri had a knack of bestowing minor films with one great song that endures time. Examples, Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezar from Aitbaar, Haan Pehli Baar from Aur Kaun?, Pyaar Manga Hai Tumhi Se from College Girl and Mana Ho Tum Behadh Haseen from Toote Khilone, among others.
On an aside, I’m surprised none of the obituaries in print and media capitalized on the ‘Chalte Chalte Mere Yeh Geet Yaad Rakhna, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ just sitting there for the taking.

And here’s Kamal with some vintage moves 😃 in MANGAMMA SABADHAM, the Tamil remake of KASAM PAIDA KARNE WALE KI.

The first connect with his music for me was through Thalaivar’s song “Unnai Azhaithathu” in “Thai Veedu”. The Wiki wrongly credits Shankar-Ganesh but you can see his signature all through the song and he is credited for it in a few places (http://rajinifans.com/boxoffice/thai-veedu.php).
Then it was the Anand Babu movie where he sings, “I am a disco dancer” and then later I found he had a big history of work in Bollywood.
RIP

Bappi did something that even RDB couldn’t manage – come up with an Anup Ghosal song that I like.
Tum saath ho zindagi bhar ke liye
His Rabindra sangeet flavored songs were also generally quite pleasing; like this Asha-Kishore beauty.
Roshan roshan raatein apni
And I don’t care what anyone says, Rambha Ho slays. 🙂

Discovered this lovely KK song as I was going through Bappi’s back catalogue on YouTube. Great melody. Interesting picturisation, with a dashing Vinod Khanna upto some dodgy Peeping Tom shenanigans at Shabana Azmi’s expense.

RIP and an amazing composer and got eclipsed by the magic of other composers of his time like laxmi pyaare etc.
He was famous for dhoom dhadaka kind of songs and in between he would surprise us with a soulful number like Dil Mein Ho tum which one can listen endlessly. His singing was also first class, and he never took a song which he could not do justice to so most of the song he sung himself were chartbusters.
Will be missed and change of guard is now happening in a big way in India and stalwarts are departing the world and very few remain from that generation though Bappi Da was still not that old…..

Anybody thinks this song somewhat ‘evokes’ Paruvame, especially the first interlude? I put that in quotes because Yeh Naina Yeh Kajal came first:

How can I ever forget Yeh Naina Yeh Kaajal? One of my absolute favorites of the Kishore-Bappi.
During one of my college classes in Spanish when we were asked to introduce ourselves in front of the class, I briefly spoke about Kishore being my favorite singer and sang the opening of this song. It was received well.

Interesting and fun interview :
Funny that he knew Quincy, couldn’t get a bigger snob than him though Quincy has earned the right to condescend.
Bappi said, “Humne Rajnikanth ka saara super hit film ke liye kaam kiya, Tamil mein” – as per wiki he did only three Tamil films and none with Rajni. No idea what he was talking about, lol.
