Self aware plus articulate as ever, he makes a great interviewee.
Unrelated to this, but I could find no space here in this blog to discuss how beautifully made Badhai do is. Especially the second half. Parts of it (her dad finally coming around to accepting her girlfriend, for instance, after the first shock) were really moving.

Tonks, seconding the love for <i.Badhai Do. (Though I wished for some tighter editing.) As well as for Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, where I thought Vani Kapoor was brilliant.
(Haven’t watched the KJ interview yet, but yes, he does make a great interviewee.)

I wish Karan Johar writes a book with all his knowledge in Indian Cinema economics. On a similar note, is there any book that talks about Indian Cinema purely on the economic and business model sense? I would love some suggestions.

A very interesting interview that covers both his own take on what kind of film works in which format and also what kind of filmmaker he is.
On the first, I am not a fan of this kind of split between OTT and big screen cinema where essentially only star vehicles go to the latter. This is where the so called Hollywood syntax as he dubs it upended the prevailing orthodoxy of Hindi cinema and once again expanded the definition of what a Hindi film could be. There is a pleasure that seeing thrillers like Kahaani 1 and 2 or Badla in the theater with its dark silence gives that you cannot get on a TV, let alone laptop or phone. But if these films will no longer make it to a theatrical release, the theatrical experience itself will become monochromatic and eventually monotonic.
About KJ the filmmaker, fair to say he is a scriptwriter and storyteller masquerading as a director? He kind of evaded a direct answer to the question of why not break boundaries by making it about trolls and narrow minded critics. And again, he talks about emulating Yash Chopra, Guru Dutt or RK and that he would end up emulating SLB in Thakt. What I get from that is he doesn’t have a distinct visual vocabulary. And because OTOH he has a distinct, I would say somewhat convoluted, style of writing dialogue, this is where critics start feeling his films are samey. They aren’t necessarily, but they are underlined by a Karan Johar way of creating and disentangling conflict. Anyhow, it will still be interesting when he does make Thakt. Certainly sounds like a long way from his comfort zone.

I am grateful to the LORD that the pandemic had forced this man to shelve TAKTH. Very disappointed that he is going to start working on it again. OTOH, I could enjoy it with a couple of beers as a stand-up comedy show like MNIK.

Because he discussed dubbing and adaptation, I would have liked to hear him explain why his adaptation of Sairat removed caste which was the central theme of the original.
