Spoilers ahead…
Tonally, the film is all over the place. I never believed that either Nayanthara or Samantha was truly in love with Vijay Sethupathi – so the stakes are non-existent.
Looking at the trailer, it appeared that Vijay Sethupathi was the luckiest man on the planet, getting to romance two gorgeous women, Nayanthara and Samantha. But the character he plays in Vignesh Shivan’s Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal – Rambo – is nothing but bad luck. He brings bad luck to people like his mother, who suffers a stroke soon after his birth. Or he himself suffers – for instance, when he wants a chocobar, it happens that the very last piece has just been sold to someone else, or else a crow shits on it. But soon, Rambo turns into the man we saw in the trailer again. His streak of bad luck apparently vanishes when he meets Kanmani (Nayanthara) and Khatija (Samantha). One visual says it all: we see Rambo with two chocobars in his hand.

@BR, Are you referring to the acting or writing or both?

Director took good care of showing two different ladies at different time point as Rambo’s mother. It wouldn’t been bad if he had made the younger lady as an aged one but Seema as his aged mother isn’t a bad choice either. BUT why didn’t he also cast someone else as younger Kala, it was ridiculous seeing Kala ‘ka in half sarees. LOL

Found the film to be fairly enjoyable. But it’s also a missed opportunity. Tamil cinema could have had it’s first proper polygamous love story (Does Sindhu Bhairavi count?)

I watched this in the theatre and had some good laughs along with the audience. The first half especially was very entertaining. It was with the second half that I had some issues that didn’t come out while watching the film, but afterwards. I found it problematic that the women will not feel anger or resentment towards him, but still compete to be with him. Also why they would go to that extent for his family and why Sam and Nayan would bond just over a dosai was not clear to me. In fact I would have loved and half expected the climax to end with Nayan and Sam coming together, realising their bisexual orientation :p
This is a well written review that captures the issues in the movie https://www.firstpost.com/opinion/kaathuvaakula-rendu-kaadhal-movie-review-samantha-nayanthara-vijay-sethupathi-deserved-better-than-a-love-letter-to-patriarchy-10609041.html
I loved, loved Vijay sethupathy in the movie. His eyes can do all the acting! And I didn’t think his role was in any way misogynist, but the female characters were the ones not developed properly. For the second time after Super Deluxe, i found Samantha’s acting to be good in a Tamil film. Nayan though for the most part was good, but lacked in emotional and serious scenes.
