Yajiv: I liked VANAKKAM CHENNAl a lot back when it was released, and it’s nice to see someone doing her own thing.
My favourite factoid was when she said PAPER ROCKET was a film before she thought of making it an OTT series. I told this to a filmmaker friend and she is doing the same thing – trying to see if a film script can be stretched to OTT length.
A pertinent question in the interview would have been, why did Redgiant pictures which didnt distribute shit for the last 10+ years suddenly now wants to distribute every big film in the last year? Is it, hmm….just a coincidence? But then you can save that for the Udhayanidhi interview …
@ BR – Nice to know that you’re finally catching up with GoT. That said, is anyone (including you) watching Better Call Saul? Arguably an end of an era after 14 years.
@vijay – Re: Red Giant. It’s a simple equation. The ruling party decides which syndicates run production, distribution and financing. Seeing a lot of IT raids on financiers and producers of late aren’t we? 😝
https://twitter.com/indhavaainko/status/1556696519356469249 – Casual Casteist Jibe that is quite normalized in TN context. And the interviewer has the gall to say this front of a possible future CM or first lady of TN. And sadly she does not reprimand him.
Vanakkam Chennai is one of those few genuine but rooted rom-com we got. Am going to give the series a watch.
@vijay – Remember earlier how the satellite rights of the big movies went to Sun TV or Jaya TV depending on who was ruling the state? This is the same story. I am genuinely curious how many producers are politically tied. We don’t really have any of the big studios functioning anymore which makes me suspect the business and politics have always been closely tied. Would make for a fun pet project.
@tamil thanos: Even if very few producers have political ties, the big money financing their movies always have. If any big movie is produced, having a financier pump in money is a must have. With or without your agreement! It’s a terrific business model in which the financier doesn’t really loose anything per se.
If the money is paid back (with interest of course), the financier wins. If not, the financier simply attaches the properties and does a hostile takeover.
@brangan: I guess thats a common thing these days? Even Pushkar-Gayathri were talking about how Suzhal started as a movie and then became a web series. As long as there’s an organic way to do it and it’s not mere padding and decompression to stretch out a two hour feature into 6-8 hours, I’m all for it.
I too really enjoyed Vanakkam Chennai. It was refreshing to see a focused (Hollywood-ish) rom-com in Tamil.
@karzzexped: On the one hand I wish the albuquerque universe is explored further with more movies or series, but on the other hand, at this point it seems like a perfect place to close things off in style. Better Call Saul is a trophy example for how to make a prequel, arguably better than the original. And unlike GoT, the creators here have proved that they can finish up great too. Waiting for the bittersweet finale, truly end of an era.
@KS: I love what they’ve managed to achieve with BCS which is more of a crime drama/tragicomedy than BrBa and El Camino which sometimes borders on neo-westernised writing and an almost bonkers, masala execution. It took me time to adjust to the new approach in BCS since they decided to proceed with a subdued, slow burn-ish writing which is paying rich dividends as it nears its completion.
And GoT isn’t the last series, which I loved, that messed up the final season. Ozark’s show-runners pretty much shot themselves in their feet in the final season.

Future First Lady of TN or not, she is a talented movie maker. She makes good movies unlike other privileged ones like Soundarya Rajinikanth.

The negative WoM has already started in social media against LSC. Taking apart scenes and projecting them as anti-Hindu, anti-India etc.
