VD talks in slow motion, and it makes the conversation kind of tiresome; it’s always a slog to sit through his interviews. Anyway, great actor; i really like watching him on screen. hope he gets a massive commercial success with Liger- though i have serious doubts about a well-past-his-prime Puri Jagannath delivering the goods.

@MANK: The fact that he speaks in a monotone doesn’t help either. Thankfully, Youtube has a playback speed adjustment option. 1.25x worked like a charm for me 😉
On a serious note, Liger; like LSC and Brahmastra, was a pre-pandemic kick-off. I didn’t like the trailer that much. VD says he had to amp up the loudness by a meter; but I definitely felt that his acting was way louder than his usual self in the trailer.

Everyone who acts in a puri Jagan film has to :), though Mahesh played it cool in Pokiri, and that made it special. I do like the Liger songs though . Aafat is an earworm; very well choreographed also

MANK: Pokiri was special for many reasons. Puri Jagan initially wanted Ravi Teja for this one, and I am happy Mahesh was cast instead. He truly owned the role (the post office scene is my favorite). And, unlike Puri Jagan’s working women heroines, Ileana’s role in Pokiri is refreshingly human (not that others are complete stereotypes, he just writes them so over the top). It is saddening that Puri Jagan could not pull off something like that again till date.

Agree about Pokiri Satya, Mahesh danced best in this film, also the way parkour was used in the fight scenes was mindblowing. the pre-climax moment when Mahesh is revealed to be the cop is pure masala gold. None of the remakes could capture the spirit of that scene fully, and Puri himself has never managed to reach those masala heights ever again. even their follow-up to Pokiri, Businessman, was horrible.
Ah! that moment when Mahesh runs out of the car…

Puri Jagannath already tried Buddha Hoga Tera Baap in Bollywood and faltered. A story from the RGV school of Mumbai underdog is almost beaten to pulp right now. And with VD looking for an overnight stardom in Hindi in order to compete with Tolly 2 Bolly Pan India heros, it will be interesting to see how this will pan out because this movie seems to be a variety thali that’s a mix of multiple cultures.

Amen to all the Pokiri appreciation. As others commented, Mahesh’s coolness balanced out Puri’s excesses resulting in the perfect tone. On one hand most Telugu masala movies are too sanitized, the threats never feel imminent and the villains end up being jokes. But the violence in Pokiri’s world feels real just the right amount without being offputtingly disturbing and most of Puri’s other flicks tend to skew towards the latter. The screenplay is tight as well, one scene leads to the other and everything fits nicely. Puri’s dialogues were a hoot and once again Mahesh’s almost nonchalant delivery is just excellent. Also great background score and soundtrack.
@Satya: And, unlike Puri Jagan’s working women heroines, Ileana’s role in Pokiri is refreshingly human
Yes, not just Puri’s own films, but most other masala flicks. This alone makes Pokiri even better for me. One minor nitpick I have is that either Ileana was too young or was directed to play so, but Shruti comes off as a late teenager instead of an early twenty something. That 3-4 years makes a difference in how aware she comes across even though it is quite better by the Telugu mainstream standards. And whoever did her costumes did not understand the assignment at all. Otherwise Pokiri is a 9.5/10 for me.

MANK: Agreed. “Aafat” is the best club song since maybe… “Kar gayi chul”!

I just caught the trailer after watching this interview. VD’s physical transformation and the always awesome Ramya Krishnan aside it went right over my head. If it is so screechingly loud on a phone, wonder how it’d sound on theatres. And WTF is Mike Tyson doing in that cowboy hat?

@voldemort
All that screeching is what makes me feel the film is going to be a hit. 🙂
The North Indian audiences are hungry for masala flicks. If this film has a decent storyline and an engaging screenplay, it might just be another “South Indian film” becoming a hit in the Hindi heartlands.

wait how is everyone here liking aafat am I missing something here? And I say this as a relatively young person – maybe im the old one lol. Kar gayi chul was def better imo
And Ananya Pandey truly looks like she’s playing dress up in that song, why she was cast is still beyond me

I don’t understand why people didn’t like Liger trailer. Compared to a lot of screeching, hero worship and absurdities seen in the trailers of a lot of “south movies”, Liger trailer was definitely better. Why should only the south have all the fun? High time North too got access to pure masala stuff.
Right now binge watching all the trolls on Godfather trailer (Lucifer remake).
“He is the Boss of the Bosses. Our one and only……” .
Pure Gold. I cant wait to watch it.

@Sam: Catchy beats, decent choreography, I can see why it is likeable. Doesn’t hold a candle to Kar Gayi Chull though. The YouTube comments gave me a good chuckle.
“And Ananya Pandey truly looks like she’s playing dress up in that song, why she was cast is still beyond me” – Well, Karan Johar’s name is above Puri Jagannath on the title card and Alia is for the likes of S. S. Rajamouli. Ananya doesn’t seem to care for anyone/anything except the camera. She isn’t even trying to have any chemistry with her co-star, lol!

Agree about Aafat being insane ear candy! With a slight tip of the hat to Madonna’s Justify My Love, this has got to be the hottest inflection of the “Aaa” syllable I’ve heard in awhile:-)

For all the arrogance that VD has displayed, he is gonna get serious brickbats for Liger. Maybe the arrogance was an indication of a complete loss of objectivity.

MANK: You are absolutely right, This is a beautiful song with magnificent beats, only to be topped by the lyrics. ‘Tune Aankhon se Pilayee’ has now seeped into my conscience and I have since been humming non-stop since I heard it yesterday. Can’t get it out of my head. So infectious, Just like this one:
