Does Bala qualify? his must-haves: misery, death, exploitative villians, earthy humor..
He manages to find different milieus though to mount his pet themes-street dancers to aghoris to crematories and so on..going for a sort of raw visceral appeal with in-your-face brutality that can make you a bit squeamish
His wife even solemnly admitted in a fan interaction few yrs back that folks just dont want to go and watch his films to get all downbeat these days as they seek cheerful entertainment. Yet he had a 10-yr run with decent to big hits.

What about GVM?
Hero falling for his sister’s friend or acquaintance , the heroine not feeling awkward when the “stranger” hero stalks her ,
romanticizing coffee shops and visiting the US of A , foot fetish , his love for Kamal , Raja , pre Iruvar Mani Ratnam and Fincher , gamely mocking his previous movies , heroes wearing the kada and owning a Royal Enfield.
These are some of the recurring stuff from his movies.
He and his movies in a way had impacted the society by making people go to gyms , join the police force and made people purchase a Royal Enfield bike and a guitar.

I think BR was referring more to the must-haves of mainstream cinema rather than individual must-haves. Like, there was a time when the heroine had to be a virgin (remember Rhythm?) or a Hero would always listen to his mother etc

Myshkin should fit the mainstream auteur category. After Bala, I don’t remember anyone who empathized deeply with the underprivileged (physically disabled, beggars, homeless) and explored dark subjects with a heart full of gold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNprVmptKT4&ab_channel=SundaresanSrinivasan
Talking of mainstream must-haves, I briefly dipped into Varun Grover’s Youtube series which explores violence, and rape on the mainstream screen. I found the discussion quite interesting.

(Forced to) have a bar song and a kuthu song featuring a yellow sari wearing woman as staples , a deliberately illogical (in a good way) compassion filled universe where even a brutal murderer gets forgiven of all his sins , scenes that happen inside a parking lot or in a subway , references to Chinese , Japanese and Christian myth and mythical characters.
The oh so obvious homages to Kurosawa and Hitchcock.
It’s actually great to see a distinctive director like Mysskin have a huge mainstream fanbase.
