I am so glad your other round table released early on before the flurry of round tables coming up left, right and center now from other channels.. It got repetitive too fast.
Looking forward to this exclusive Tamil one for a change 🙂

But then GVM made his best movie since Yennai Arindhaal with VTK , it brought back his fans who left him for good and it shut down the thoughts that his days are over…
So that might be the reason…

The last time I had GVM in a round table was in 2018/19, I guess. The one with Vetri and all.
And yes, I thought he made a spectacular film with VTK — loved it to bits. So I wanted him there. And also for one particular question about being one of the last major filmmakers to still use songs not just as montage-fillers but as REAL “people mouthing words” songs.
I loved how Mani Ratnam used songs in PS1 to show simultaneous action — but that also ended up with the songs being “broken”. But seeing Mallipoo on the big screen, for instance, describing the mental state of those killers while also being a kickass dance number — was SUCH a treat.

Re Mallipoo: I don’t know why people don’t approve of choosing Madhushree as the singer. The accent just gives a richer background to the hitman’s love story.

The feel of the song is lost and I could not make sense of half the words the first time I heard it in theatre. I don’t know what you mean by accent, the pronunciation was way off for a lot of words. When the song is meant to be coming from someone down south, its ok if they hadnt sung with southern accent, just normal accent would have sufficed

On a tangent, why don’t Priyanka and Alka Ajith get Tamil songs? Is bad accent a fetish of some sort now? Antara Nandy did well on Alaikkadal but I am not sure why a singer like her has to brought in from out of left field when very good (and as yet badly untapped) options exist closer home in TN.

@Deepak Chandran He married someone who speaks/sings like Madhushree! Maybe their love story will have a spinoff, Better Call Iyer (Delhi Ganesh from Nayagan).

Oh yeah it doesnt need a VTK or roundtable to see GVM around here 🙂 He was there as the first guest of that brief foodie episode as well last year in filmcompanion I suppose..

IMO “people mouthing words” does not work. Unless the characters are literally playing singers in that particular scene it just comes across as something that feels so forced that it pulls you out of the film and makes you cringe.

The video went up last evening. Have put it up now.
Cholan Raje: Wow 🙂 We surely differ here. When done well, “people mouthing words” is one of the most magical things about our cinema. And Golden Age Hollywood musicals and so on. I just love that break in “continuity”, when the mood changes and the sentences spoken turn into lyrics that are sung.

BR: Yes, my bad. It works in musicals and films that are not meant to be realistic in terms of their execution…I guess what I meant is that it does not work for films like VTK.

Cholan Raje: No. I am saying I like lip-sync siging EVEN in serious films like VTK. It takes us out of the “reality” for a few minutes and helps us enter the “dreamy world” the lovers find themselves in… The song’s prelude is the kind of “staircase” to enter that special world.

@BR: Just talking specifically about this song Mallipu, I felt that it was one of the high points of the movie. Up until that point in the movie, we were shown the hardships faced by the people who work in that hotel and stay in that one room and this song was their escape from that drudgery and tragedy that was their life. But by God! Through this song and their escape, the director actually amplifies the tragedy of their lives and takes the audience deep into the darkness. It was a heartbreaking moment. Aiding this was the tune, rhythm, the voice and the dance of the actors…it was surely one of the highlights, at least for me 🙂

in GVM’s songs the lip syncing comes and goes in the song, thats an issue for me..the worst example is uyirile enadhu uyirile in vettaiyaadu..until then Kamal was a 50ish cop, during the song you suddenly turned him back into the kaaki chattai Kamal of the 80s singing ‘kanmaniye pesu’..raasaaLi in acham yenbadhu madamaiyada is another..

BR: I think this could be generation gap issue. We were so used to the idea of songs being an integral part of the film up to 90s or even early 00s. I love Mar Jaayein Hum in Shikara, especially the reprise which is even more poignant. Also, the placement of Moh Moh Ke Daage in Dum Laga Ke Haisa is brilliant. It can be hit-or-miss but that’s almost everything in the movies. It depends on the execution more than anything.

Oh wait, both those songs I mentioned don’t have actors mouthing! But it wouldn’t make a difference to me. Yes, if for the sake of mouthing, they do terrible dance steps or the old super slo-mo we used to see (Vaa Vennila first interlude is a classic example of this), then that’s irritating. But that’s, again, more about the choreography than the song or the concept of mouthing lyrics being bad. I love the cinematography and choreography both of Oho Megam Vandhadho, it’s so beautifully shot.

Mallipoo works in the film’s context but the other love song where the lead actors are lip syncing is just cringe. Would have liked if the song just played in the background. Didn’t work for me at all.

Lokesh saying when he writes a film, he keeps in mind the clap-inducing and whistle-inducing moments in it. Well, NOW I have a pretty good idea why his films don’t work for me. I wonder if SSR has been asked that or said something along those lines. My hunch is the mass moments come up organically in his movies and are not manipulated into being.

@BR. I love your interviews. And I loved your last roundtable with pan India stars. But this time I found you laboured. There was too much of reassuring of how good they are by you. Your other round table was much more chill. This one felt very frosty. Archana was the best. Only from her could we know some details of Tamil film industry today. Felt GVM was snarky to her.

@BR – I preferred this roundtable better, to the pan-Indian one as well. The latter was much more experimental, as opposed to the former, which was very settled and felt like hearing a lo-fi beat song in the background.
I also think that Lokesh is not great with group discussions – something that I noticed in FC’s roundtable as well. He mostly speaks only on request and seems like he’s a better listener than a speaker.
He’s great with one-on-one discussions though.

several key points which I thought would be raised but not discussed- how mediocre the current TFM scene is, how songs have been given a step motherly treatment even in star vehicles..the issue of why producers are chasing big stars with 70-100cr salary checks and then cribbing about the economics of it, (Archana could have been asked this).. and pushing the envelope a bit further, how a single family or an individual is distributing all big films in TN and gets to decide who releases what and where and what sort of issues this virtual monopoly is causing and so on..this roundtable was all nicey-nicey and was about how everybody is in ‘a great space’ and how everything is looking hunky dory..

Sorry BR, I found this to be quite boring. The questions didn’t excite me that much and I found it hard to get through the first several minutes of discussion about stars. I felt like a lot of the discussion space was given to Lokesh and he is not a very engaging speaker. Archana and Vignesh were the only ones who were interesting to listen to.
Any reason that Pa. Ranjith and Manikandan were not a part of this? I am curious how you selected people for this round table.

I think the songs nowadays are just used to promote the movie , like the teaser or a trailer.
Instead of trying to have a longer shelf life and replay value, the music companies just use songs to amass huge number of views on their YouTube channel and the composers compose something in the name of “trendy” music which only appeals to the instagram reel guys and YouTube shorts dudes.
The Dippam Dippam , Bimbiliki Pilapi kinda nursery rhymesque lyrics aren’t helping at all.
I mean , every soundtrack of a movie that features a big hero has this mandatory paalvaadi lyrics song , as I said to “sound trendy”.

@Vijay – Missed the point Vignesh Shivan made about OTTs? He made it sound as nice as possible but I think what he was actually trying to say was “If OTTs are the ultimate answer to our big screen films looking to make good content without the crutch of needing superstars to sell them, why not have your own writing team and put out just your original content? You readily have a brand, a platform to showcase but still why do you need people like us who have already tasted big screen success to come and make content for you so you can make an easy sell declaring “Made by GVM/Vignesh Shivan”?” Looks like he didn’t have a good experience working on Paava Kadhaigal.

Wikki was nice in the interview , his cake photo with Tarantino at Cannes story was silly fun but his ” stars screen la vandha podhum , audience rasipaanga” answer irked me.
It shows the ” thiraippadam vendam , un pugaipadam podhum” mentality that today’s audience have towards mass masala movies.
No wonder his friend Nelson made that sort of a movie with Vijay that had him shoot random people to a loud , ear splitting Anirudh background score.

@brangan Sorry to be pedantic. But want to point this out since used the word multi-verse to refer to LCU in some of your previous interviews as well.
What Lokesh is making is a “Cinematic Universe” and not a “Multi-verse”. Mutli-verse, at least in cinema, is when multiple cinematic universes come together or have a cross-over. Like Sam Raimi’s Spiederman showing up in No Way Home or Professor X from the Bryan Singer’s X-Men universe showing up in Multiverse of Madness.
