a little sad to see the podcast is in Tamil 😭
But understood that not everything needs to be catered to viewers who don’t know the language. Just out of curiosity, any reason why you chose to do the podcast in Tamil, especially with the pan-India expansion phase you’re currently in? hahaha
It would be awesome if Galatta could continue adding English subs to your Tamil interviews though. I still listen to them with my broken understanding of the language, but I’m sure I miss a lot of things.

Congrats for making your debut as a podcaster , BR.
You sounded super fun and comfortable in this podcast without any long pauses or stammering..
And I often thought your Tamil was a bit Peter-ish tbh and you won’t speak it with a flow , but you proved me wrong.
Another feather in the cap of yours!

So Spotify wanted a Tanglish-y show. Not pan-Indian.
But at Galatta, we have been doing our best to subtitle at least the big interviews. At FC, we had a guy whse superpower was subtitling. He’d do like 2-hour conversations in half a day and we’d have it up by evening 😂 But he lost interest soon.

This is also probably going to take some time for me to find my voice, so to speak — like how movingvl to video took time. But I am finding the experience fascinating.

Nice idea…
Since it’s 2023 , Baddy can do a special podcast with GVM , Harris Jayaraj and Thamarai on 20 Years of Kaakha Kaakha and 15 years of Vaaranam Aayiram and talk about the process behind creating those songs in detail.

@BR,
Right from the beginning, I was puzzled by your association with Galatta… I felt that it may not be the right choice… It’s kind of going down a bit… Look at the YouTube contents and captions of “Galatta Tamil”, it’s yucky..
I’m happy for this Spotify association. Congrats.

You made a fascinating point about Rahman thriving at the right time. His explosion seems synonymous with the globalization scene in the early 90s. Our folks had easy access to other cultures and we started loving Rahman (and maybe even Sharukh) catering to our new curiosities.

While I initially wasn’t sure about BR’s move from FC to Galatta, I saw that it did “liberate” him. He’s like critics across borders now (unlike FC which had a zonal rep). 😁

K: Should we judge a channel by the “yucky” (as you say) YouTube comments or by the content we put out? Which other channel in the entertainment space has put out a long interview with — say — Rima Das? And as long as the viewers are consuming the content, isn’t that what matters?
If you feel the CONTENT in Galatta Plus is not up to the mark, then sure, I will engage with you in a discussion about what’s not working.
But I am happier now with Galatta. Earlier, because I used to do fewer interviews, I picked and chose only (mostly) “serious” actors or filmmakers. (Again, mostly.) But now, I am able to go across the spectrum.
On Monday, for instance, I have an interview coming up where the interviewee is not a major “film person” but also a bit of a life coach etc. And the conversation went into a very different zone.
And yesterday, I had one of the best ever times talking about films with a duo. I felt SO HAPPY after the interview because there’s nothing more satisfying than deep-diving into cinema/music with super-responsive (and super-passionate) interviewees.
So no, from my perspective, the Galatta move has been a good one. Maybe it helps that I don’t read YouTube comments all that much 🙂

@BR,
Sorry, I was not referring to Galatta Plus. I was referring to “Galatta Tamil”. I used to see some weird thumbnails in “Galatta Tamil”. I wanted to highlight some examples, but I am not finding it now. I never clicked any of the video on “Galatta Tamil”. Maybe only the thumbnails are the problem.
But I love everything you do in the Plus channel. Sorry if I offended you. That was not my intention. Infact opposite, I admire you and your work. I wish success in everything you do.
Thanks again.

Superb start as you ‘segue’ into another journey. Your talk was much more interesting, at least to me, than the chat with GVP. Tho the GVP thing kind of fits in the casual youtube culture aka Beer Biceps/Mumbiker so it has its own audience.
I didn’t know there was actually an Italian word for making things look effortless in art. Could just as easily apply to Sachin Tendulkar/Mark Waugh/VVS in cricket or, of course, Le Fed in tennis.
What you said about the music ‘feeling’ Western-and-Indian is very much akin to what I wrote on quora on a question about what makes Rahman akin. Ilayaraja could use a direct quote from Four Seasons and still retain that distinctive, ‘Indian’ film music sound (he actually sort of did that anyway on Azhagu Ayiram). It’s something very fascinating – maybe in terms of how he uses harmony, he is at times even more Western than Rahman but the vocal layer on top asserts a very strong Indian flavour.
But with Rahman, that last piece of the puzzle was also solved/put away. Rahman made Indian music that a Westerner could listen to without cringing. You can make of that what you will and some will bristle at the import of this but this was the logical conclusion of film music anyway. There had always been Western influence in film music and that was how it distinguished itself from purely Indian native music forms. Rahman peeled off the last layer and brought even the Western feel into film music. That’s why it has not just pan Indian but even, at an extent, pan-global appeal.
I don’t know if you will consider doing podcasts on your growing-up-with-Ilayaraja experience too because it would be even more fascinating from a nostalgia perspective, especially for the children of liberalisation like me. I for one would really like to know how you discovered an album like Kairaasikaran. Everyone knows about Salangai Oli, Oru Kaithiyin Diary or Naan Paadum Paadal from 1984 but even a film like Kairaasikaran has two lovely SPB-SJ duets with the second interlude of Kaiveesum Thamarai being, imo, the piece-de-resistance. So did you have to go watch it in theater to listen to the songs like many Raja fans used to back then? Or were you able to source a cassette?

Surprised to see the term sprezzatura applied to Rehman – his music is full of explicit artifice, unusual sounds that he takes great care to emphasize. IMHO it’s his biggest weakness. Ilayaraja is the one whose music is effortlessly mixing melody and rhythm.

Pessimist: I had the same thought. There are times when Rahman does something that seems free flowing, but the man for the word is definitely Ilayaraja? Man used to release 50 albums every year.

I personally enjoyed the GVPrakash interview. Whatever BR talks about Rahman I would have read in some previous article unless it is about a specific song.
A recent interview is always more fresh. I hope the weekly podcast contains more music related stuff as I feel Galatta Plus interviews don’t often bring in the music directors/singers. I wonder why.

Galatta still has an actresses gallery next to your reviews. So I am judging the site based on its ‘content’. I’m glad GP has given you more freedom than FC. I’m yet to listen to the Hima Das one, but your range of interviews have been thoroughly enjoyable. I just caught the Sunny Leone one yesterday and it was delightful. But that is to your credit. Otherwise I’m confident in saying GP would have no interest talking to either HD or SL (The latter’s pictures would feature on the site however)

Enjoyed the chatty, almost stream-of-consciousness podcast. It felt like catching up with a friend. And thanks for bringing back the memory of listening to Pudhu Vellai Mazhai for the first time. Exact same feeling, including that shattering of glass thing. I remember making my north-Indian friends listen to Rangeela while feeling so proud of that boy from Madras!
I also totally get that sprezzatura feeling especially when I listen to ARR sing. Special mention to Rehna Tu and Jaane Tu-Jaane Na.
Keep the podcasts coming BR saab!
