Kind of got a depressing vibe from this interview, I think its because of the way he talks – usually you either find a sense of passion or energy in interviews (even if it is not natural), here he seems tired. Haven’t seen his other interviews – is this how he is? Paavam

No , he has been giving continuous interviews to almost every popular Tamil Youtube channels , that tiredness and stress is the reason why he often bends down and closes his eyes in Baddy’s interview…
The man needs to take a long , deep sleep…

@hari prasad: Looks like a lot is riding on the outcome of Thunivu, both for Boney and Vinoth, considering their previous collaboration didn’t satisfy the commercial expectations.
The tiredness of Vinoth’s delivery notwithstanding, this might well become the most watched Galatta Plus video this year 😉

Liked the interview a lot. He comes across as an unpretentious filmmaker. But I think Ajith fans are going to be pissed that there were no questions about Thunivu. His answers in other interviews were also honest and candid. There was one gutsy statement he made saying fans shouldn’t be spending so much of their time on cinema. That coming from a guy who has an Ajith film releasing says a lot about his thought process. I am doing my job neengalum poi velaya parungada nu solra mari.

Not sure if anyone is hearing this but this is being heavily rumoured to be an expansion of the Vinayak Mahadev Saga.
Though I’m taking the above with a pinch of oorka, it really seems like IPs and extended universes are the buzz words for Indian cinema this year.

I find his “information comes first” similar to something Vetrimaaran said recently. He said that he doesn’t try to tell a story but it gets formed when he does extensive research. And both Vada Chennai and Visaranai were formed during this research. You can kind of see that in both Theeran and Sathuranga vettai.
He also said he is not great at the “people” aspect or the emotions in a story. Ironically I really admired how he managed to bring in a personal element in both Theeran (the protagonist’s professional success comes at a great personal cost) and Nerkonda Paarvai (where the victory in court means redemption for a man who couldn’t save his wife and unborn kids), essentially films about men succeeding professionally.

He seems to think of a film in terms of system design but since he thinks of himself as a businessman, and the fact that a star has to be fit into his system, severely limit the kind of system and “information” he can work with. Whatever it may be, having Ajith in the film is all the “information” I need to stay away from it.

BR, I feel H.Vinoth doesn’t seem like an artist or a businessman. His approach seems quite engineering-esque. He finds an undervalued space and is ready to operate in it, he constructs fight sequences. That’s probably why the emotional sequences in his movies are a dud. He tried to fit them into the movie rather than integrating them organically.

Seems like an interesting guy that is capable of bringing out an unique style to our cinema. If he puts in the same level effort for his emotional tracks as he does for his action sequences, he will become very huge.

I’m rooting for him. Theeran had lots of exciting edge of seat action; hopefully he is able to deliver the goods for Thunivu.

Kudos boss for bringing so much out of a guy who (from the looks of it) hasn’t slept for days. I really liked his straightforward , no-frills attitude towards his work. Reminded me of a recent documentary I saw of William Friedkin, where Friedkin also said that apart from a couple of directors like Fellini, none of the directors are artists, just professionals doing a job. I think Vinoth is one of the best action directors working in films (even better than that overrated Lokesh Kangaraj), the action scenes in Theeran were all very well choreographed. Him repeatedly working with Ajith is bad news for guys like me, but I hope he manages to acquire some commercial clout out of it which will help him get films with lesser stars made.

On Art, Science, Cinema, here is a comment from Fellini himself:
“…Making a movie is a mathematical operation. It is like sending a missile to the moon. It isn’t improvised. It is too defined to be called improvisational, too mechanical. Art is a scientific operation, so I can say that what we usually call improvisation is in my case just having an ear and eye for things that sometimes occur during the time we are making the picture.”

If his vision is dispensing information then he is better off making documentaries. His perspective about being ok with adding unwanted scenes so he can dispense information is concerning. That coupled with inability to conceive good drama/emotion will result in lots of flab. Looks like thats what happened in Valimai. And it doesn’t bode well for Thunivu. He should seriously consider collaborating with writers who can conceive good drama/emotion since that is the base of a good feature film.
The interview was very exciting though with lots of unique and perspective. I think he is one of the directors whose interviews are much more entertaining and layered than his movies(another director I can think of is Vasanth).

Maybe he is going to teach us all on how to conduct the perfect bank heist in Thunivu..I just wondered watching this how he got his first pitch through with whoever the producer was
