Oh man, this is like now the issue/discussion has been slapped on the face, had a knife twisted in itself and then this podcast has come in now to rub salt on the wound and then put all of it inside the frying pan while more fuel was being added to the fire before ultimately throwing whatever is left of the “discussion” into the fire!

What ” fire ” , what ” salt ” , whose ” knife ” got twisted?
Care to explain please?

What is BR and the regulars’ view on the two Raja songs that released recently? One from Viduthalai and the other from Rangamarthanda? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wG_wCQFjY4

@BR – Oh BR! I know it was harmless at your end , but I just meant the issue would again be discussed in this thread too apart from the previous one.

Maybe there’s a geo blocker for this one. There shouldn’t be because I have been able to listen to your podcasts.

Sudhir said in this podcast that Megam Kottatum was the only Kamal song that had a SPB and a Kamal version or something like that.
I don’t think so.
There exists a SPB version of the Raja Kaiya Vecha song from Aboorva Sagodharargal
Here it is:

Speaking of Kamal, he must be one of the few if not only Tamil actors (excluding singer actors like SPB) who has done playback for ANOTHER actor. He sang Ponmaanai Theduthe for Mike Mohan. This sort of thing never happened in Hindi as far as I know, unless Raj Kapoor did playback for other major stars of his time.

Vijay sang that Dhum Adikura Style song for Suriya in Periyanna which was directed by SAC ,
An 18 year old Simbu sang that Dil Dil Italy Kattil song for Ajith in Red ,
Siddharth sang Adada for Jayam Ravi in Santhosh Subramaniam ,
Dhanush sang a song for Puneeth Rajkumar in Kannada for the movie Vajrakaya.
There are some examples like this.

I think after Kamal , Vijay is the only hero to have sang for almost all the major music directors that he worked with starting from Raja , Rahman , Deva , SA Rajkumar , Sirpy , Vidyasagar , Yuvan , Harris , DSP to Imman , GV Prakash , S Thaman , Anirudh and Santhosh Narayanan.
Mani Sharma is the only one under whose composition Vijay is yet to sing.

Dhanush is another. Yuvan, HJ, Deva, GVP, Ghibran, Anirudh and IR himself most recently. I didn’t check if Dhanush has sung for Rahman too.

Finally a modern Raja track without any pomposity or heavy orchestrations , just a guitar and his vocals.
Reminded me a bit of Vandhale Allipoo…
Maybe Kumararaja might have pushed Raja harder without blindly receiving what he delivers.

hariprasad: Track sounds nice albeit rather like the modern muzak (apt for ‘modern love’?) you hear esp in Bolly soundtracks and without the psychedelia of Vanthale Allipoo at least from what I could make out in the snatch. I wish he hadn’t sung it though. As a singer, he’s way overstayed his welcome. Still think this isn’t a patch on Nannu Nannuga. Which also doesn’t have any heavy orchestration – it’s pretty much a standard rock set up.

Probably Raja’s best overall album after Neethane En Ponvasantham..
That Kaala Visai song might be the closest I’ve heard Raja do a country waltz sorta song and there’s a sense of Raja composing a 50s / 60s musical all over the album.

I am still partial to Abbayitho Ammayi; on some days I like it more than NEPV! But within Tamil, this is a splendid showcase after a long time for Raja in a very urban/urbane and ostensibly youth centric context. IF the series does well with the public, it could do more for him than NEPV (which was a flop).
That said, my pick of all the tracks on the album was Sean Roldan’s Uravu. Such a beautiful fusing of rustic tinged melody with an alt/indie sound.

For me , this album was a great reunion for the Bharathiraja – Ilaiyaraja combo after Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu and ironically they reunited in an urban millieu subject after Tik Tik Tik , which came 4 damn decades ago.
