Here’s an example of what passes for comedy in a Radha Mohan movie. Sandhya (the spirited Tanya Ravichandran) pulls a male friend close for a selfie. He preens happily… until she tells him the picture is her response to a friend who went to Bangkok and clicked herself with a chimp. Here’s an example of what passes for tragedy in a Radha Mohan movie. Louis (M. S. Bhaskar) tells a sad story — his life’s story — to a man he’s just met, to the accompaniment of sad music that alerts us that this isn’t a Radha Mohan Comedy Scene™ but a Radha Mohan Tragedy Scene™. Alternate these emotions for a couple of hours and you get Brindhaavanam. The tag line could be “If you liked Mozhi…”

I don’t dislike Radha Mohan. I dislike his films. It’s not personal. It’s about the work. 😀

Looks like you put a full stop to the star ratings. Nice! It was a distraction.

Yes yes, sorry. if you felt I was implying otherwise. I stopped watching after Payanam, but unlike you, liked a couple of his movies before that (at least the funny parts).

Wow, that’s harsh. Can’t think of one right now, but I’m sure you’ve been far more lenient on movies considered much worse (by any objective standard). Haven’t seen this movie, but if it’s anything like Mozhi, it can’t be as bad as you make it out to be.

@lastmohican Radha Mohan hasn’t made anything close to Mozhi in a long time.

I loved Mozhi… Don’t know whether having Prithviraj in the lead had anything to do with it. But definitely the first scene where Jyothika beats up the drunkard did. My face surely looked like Prithviraj’s the first time I saw it. And Radha Mohan is the only answer to a rom-com without loosu ponnu in Tamil cinema thereby making his movies a favourite of mine

Since you asked, though I feel it was more sarcastic, BR sir, let me try to analyse. (I guess this is the after effect of watching Kirik party yesterday night 😄. Disclaimer: the following is from my limited experience of movie watching and not from any serious study of the art itself). For me a good rom-com is a Nora Ephron movie say you’ve got mail, Harry met Sally and the likes… Going from that template it goes like this – boy meets girl, boy and girl already have some relationship/trust or some equivalent issues. And through the course of the movie, how these issues get resolved and the boy finally gets together with the girl along with a few laughs, a few tears and a smile at the end of the movie… I guess azhagiya theeye, Mozhi, abhiyum naanum fits THAT bill. Hence proved! 😁

Although when I think about it, abhiyum naanum is more about the father getting along with the son in law… Hmmm…

@praneshp “Radha Mohan hasn’t made anything close to Mozhi in a long time.”
…may well be true, but can’t speak for that since I haven’t seen any of his later offerings(that I know of), like Abhiyum Naanum or Payanam. I liked Mozhi though. My reference to Mozhi was only bcoz of the suggested tagline and I didn’t remember Mozhi being a set of Comedy scenes and Tragedy scenes just stitched together poorly.
