Spoilers ahead…
The star is in his zone, but the film is a chain link of missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Even the slapstick fight is not as slapsticky as it should be.
Anudeep KV’s USP is silliness. In Jathi Ratnalu, he roped in three actors: Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna. And he used these actors as punching bags for his brand of brilliantly nonsensical one-liners. I took some time to warm up to the film, but once I got on its wavelength, it became a blast. Anudeep treats silly situations in a silly way. He also treats serious situations in a silly way. Even when we think we are in for major melodrama, he keeps undercutting the mood with humour. He goes for the same approach in Prince, but this time, it doesn’t work. Why? The first reason may be Sivakarthikeyan. This is right up the actor’s zone and he is excellent, but he is also too big a star. This film may have worked for him before Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga, but today, after his rapid ascent to the top, we expect something a little… substantial, something big-screen worthy.

This is either going to be a cringefest or silly comedy gold. Jathiratnalu walked on a this very thin line of being cringe but with great timings from the actors made it quite a blast to watch.

Seeing yet another film where a Tamil guy romances a white girl (wish fulfillment for the colourist male masses, I guess) makes me wonder what the last film was that had a white guy romancing a Tamil girl. Was it Little John with Jyothika and Robert Mitchum’s grandson?

Frankly Jathi ratnalu didn’t work for lot or people. I don’t think Anudeep’s movies are ‘for reviews’, they come with a certain specialty… The audience should be half drunk with a bunch of howling friends

I completely understand the notion that the movie lacks a cohesive vision (beyond jokes) and a superficial paean to peace and love and there isn’t a lot of technical mastery or artistry (the number of shots framed on a single actor during dialogue exchanges screamed laziness!), but…
I had a complete blast at this one. Comedy movies are all about the vibes about the theater and maybe we had a weird self-selection, but there were numerous sections filled with howling from the theater (like the nonsensical climax speech). Most fun I’ve had at a Tamil comedy probably since Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.

I caught this on Hotstar and didn’t mind it at all. The film made me laugh out loud many times, but not frequently enough to be fully satisfied. Still, this type of absurd comedy is a departure from the usual types of films Sivakarthikeyan does, and it’s largely thanks to him that it works even partly.
