A new start today: as Editor, Film Companion (South) and Chief Consultant, Programming, Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star.
It’s a bit nerve-wracking, to be honest — this move to digital. I’ve talked about it in my first post for FC:
http://www.filmcompanion.in/article/southern-lights-hello-from-this-side-of-the-vindhyas
So, about the blog. My reviews of (and pieces on) South Indian films will be published on the FC site, and I will link to them from here. I hope at least some of you will not find that too painful, and continue to read me there.
But I hope to keep writing Hindi film reviews here, and also general posts.
Fingers crossed. Let’s see where this goes.
PS: The past month has been really crazy, and I haven’t been as involved with the comments as I would have liked. I hope to remedy this once things settle down.

This is coming from Neverland where we PeterPan-like fans have irrational thoughts of possessiveness and FOMO. Sorry if that sounds a little creepy. Correct me if I am wrong.
Reminds me of the famous “Main buri hoon” scene from Dil To Paagal Hai.

It’s great to see you be a part of these new ventures, BR. I also couldn’t help but feel a bit disheartened, not because you moved from The Hindu to FC, but because of your complete shift to the digital media. It was upon the realization that my old school, digital media-agnostic dad who seeks out your reviews every Sunday, might not be able to read your pieces printed in solid paper. But I guess he has to keep up with the times like all of us. I personally don’t mind your writings moved to somewhere else, but I really hope the comments section here stays intact (since you’ve mentioned that there will be an open thread with a link to the FC page). This place is home to a lot of our unbridled thoughts and I don’t see us getting this kind of comfort to involve in extensive discussions elsewhere.
On the other hand, I saw what your reviews did to a ‘D16’ and ‘Uriyadi’ on a local scale and could imagine the prospects of such movies getting recognized nationally with this new endeavor of yours. Moreover you get to do away with the occupational hazards of having to endure ordeals such as ‘Muthuramalingam’ and its likes. I believe the choice of picking movies you want to review, lies with you here. I hope they make you review Hindi movies as well, as they should’ve realized you’re leagues ahead of anyone from the current lot in movie deconstruction. And I share MANK’s concern about videoing your reviews. I mean the actual joy in your reviews is the slow transformation of every word into the scene, unfolding in our minds pixel by pixel, as we chew the words one at a time and borrow your vision. The fast food-y video format doesn’t give us the time to chew, rather dumping us with a lot of information to swallow directly.
With all that said, best wishes! We’re as excited and nervous as you are.

Best wishes BR. I am happy that this will serve as a platform to give access to South films for viewers from other parts of the country. I have been looking for a good reviewer of Malayalam films for a long time, so who better than you 😀 At the same time, am quite sad that you would only provide a link to the South film reviews on the FC site. Typically, your reviews which are
published on the newspapers have been edited to fit so and so number of words, but the ones on the blog have always been longer. Assuming your FC reviews also have a limit on word count, I will sorely miss reading long reviews for Tamil movies. When I read your reviews, I usually don’t want them to end. I hope not to miss this in the FC reviews.
Also, you mention “The fact that we didn’t have to review every single release, like a chore, but instead talk about only the big films, the important films, the worthy films.” I hope you do continue to review small films like Uriyadi, D16… Without your reviews, I would have never attempted to watch those movies. All this is from a selfish reader-fan point of view 🙂 Leaving aside that, best wishes for the new chapter!

BR sir, I am asking forgiveness in the beginning itself for this rant… But you are after all, a promoter of free speech
Change is always meant to happen, so you have moved, hopefully forward, to what seemed a better opportunity. But like some others who have expressed, I feel disappointed. I was thinking maybe the move was within Hindu itself. Because, ( I may sound a tad like the conspiracy theorists on YouTube), I looks like this maybe a concerted effort to rein in your hindi movie reviews. You said that this role will give you an opportunity to review important movies, worthy movies. How do you as a critic decide which is important or which is worthy unless you watch every movie that is released. Also that amounts to 5-10 movies in all southern languages put together, which is a herculean task for any person. Either you will have to be proficient in all the southern languages or you will have to depend on marketing hype or hearsay to watch the movies. As testified by many on this blog, the only reason many watched and urged others to watch movies like D-16 was you and only you. So now it has become like our own annachi kada with the warm welcoming smile has become the big, showy, supermarket with the disinterested manager. (Sorry, that was the first analogy that came. Damn you, sales job!). Probably this is where the sense of betrayal is creeping in.
Again, your effort will translate to better viewership only if the movie is also released in North indian multiplexes with subtitles, whose lack you yourself keep lamenting about. Unless these two work in tandem (review reach and subtitled movie release), I am very sorry, I dont see how your work in FC is going to take South Indian movies to a bigger platform. And always there is this thing, a North Indian talking about a south indian movie always has a different effect than a south Indian talking about a south Indian movie. I sincerely hope I am proven wrong on all counts, because like many others here, I am a true fan of your work and only want to see your growth…

To all alarmists / sceptics / naysayers:
Even in The Hindu, I was the Tamil film critic. Films in all other languages were being reviewed only on this blog. So I don’t get the “restrict me to South” comment.
We are trying something out. For the first time, there is an attempt being made by a site (not a newspaper, but a purely online portal) to cover north + south. It felt like something I should be in.
So yes, I am going to have to depend on subtitles for films in Kannada or Telugu. Which means if the film isn’t released with subtitles here, I’m not going to be able to review it,
So yes, for the video interviews, not everyone’s going to be able to talk in English and we’ll have to figure something out.
So yes, we’ll have to wait and see if we ARE going to be able to take south Indian films to a new audience, because wanting to do something is different from that thing actually happening.
But I also feel that sometimes one just has to dive in and see what happens. Yes, there are going to be teething troubles. Some things will work, some things won’t. But if we keep second-guessing everything, then nothing will get done.
As I said, I was fully in line with Anupama’s vision of establishing a quality platform for pan-Indian cinema. That was a good enough beginning. Now let’s see where this goes…

Congrats BR – a good move professionally. On a personal level , it’s like your favorite indie band being signed up by a big record label. A part of you feels happy, but you also know that the band loses it’s unique sound as it becomes mainstream ,MBAs call the shots and bottom line becomes the sole motive – hope that doesn’t happen. If I want to read the full review , can I read and comment here as before, or do I have to go to FC’s site ?. If so , I wish that most of the commenters migrate there . This is the tricky part IMO.

When I first started reading your work you used to write something called “Part of the Picture” and I used to enjoy it a lot. But I did hope that you write more regarding Tamil movies than you were doing at that time. And that wish did come true. It was fun but much as I enjoy your sarcasm when you write about a movie, you don’t like. I prefer it when you wax eloquent about something you do like. Come to think of it, I still miss the “Part of the Picture” section
I am a bit foggy about what fans who don’t watch movies can expect from this venture. I guess I have to wait and watch. Like Anuja was saying, I am glad you will still write. Movies are incidental. Writing is the main thing. Do consider bitty ruminating a bit more, it has been awhile. Even short ruminations are ok. People can’t follow you on twitter AND Facebook AND blog AND funky website and you should consider that and make it easier for us.
🙂

Brangan, this is my first brush with Film Companion. i might have watched the odd youtube video or so , but never has been on that site before. i liked it. there is a lot good stuff on the site. i have been going through the site for a couple of days now.i read a lot of the material they have there, saw some interesting videos too. i never thought much of Anupama chopra as a reviewer, so i was concerned . but it seems that she has a nice vision about what the site has to be vis a vis cinema is concerned. so i am not apprehensive about your moving over there
i have read all the reviews you just posted there and honestly it just didn’t feel right. you just didnt feel like your usual self. i may be right or wrong, but it seems that you have cut down a lot on your humor and sarcasm, perhaps due to the burden of presenting southern cinema to the north and you didn’t want to appear too condescending. i agree with a lot of people here about the font and the layout and stuff like that. , it appear far too complicated on the phone . its a little better on the laptop. But i think the major issue was that the first batch of films that you reviewed weren’t inspiring enough and were pretty lackluster, so you couldnt be bothered to put out your full blown review in your typical style, that coupled with the change in layout and stuff like that is making this transitional phase , rather more difficult than it should actually be.once the movies improve, i am sure things would settle down
the only problem is in regarding to commenting. Earlier we would just read your review and spontaneously react to that by commenting on that here , perhaps on the film or may be one of your quotes in the review that influenced us the most, there was an organic quality to that. i am afraid that’s lost now.we have to get used to that. But oddly enough , now i am glad that you are not reviewing hindi films for that site and you will be directly posting them here. so that traditional blog experience we have here will still be retained
Regarding your video review, you have improved a lot from your hindu days. the video of Kuttram 23 was pretty good. you seemed to have become very comfortable in front of the camera.you have started to smile a lot more 🙂 there is an extreme likeability to your screen presence, as opposed to lot of others – i dont want to take any names here – who come across as arrogant and trying to play god , you give off the vibes of a wise old lovable grandpa speaking about what you found good and bad about the movie.i like the way you structured the review, its really like the synopsis of your written review. also the cuts with the footage from the movie was very well done. so your video review together with your written review presents a nice combo. we watch the review and expand on that by reading it. i hope you can keep that balance in your future reviews
Finally i would just say that Its been a long association with you stretching almost 15 years now – on and off – , first on Indian Express and then Hindu, in between you started this blog and i have been regular reader\poster here for a while now And as i grew from a boy into a man and as a fan of movies as entertainment to an ardent admires of it as an art form ,your writings have gone a long way in shaping my movie viewing sensibilities. so as i see you make one more transition in your career as a critic , all i have to say is , its a very courageous move on your part and i am sure this must have not been an easy decision to make and a lot of thought must have gone in to it. . i suppose i just have to keep the trust in you and take the dive with you and see where it goes. All the best……

Being recognized as a good critic with great writing skills, by itself, is quite an achievement. Far more impressive is the sense of community that has been fostered among a loyal and passionate fan base of your blog. But, change brings with it skepticism, some of which may be justifiable. Also, separation anxiety can manifest itself as skepticism. Allaying the concerns of the passionate regardless of the source of the skepticism is tricky business. As you step on to a new stage, you deserve good cheer and best wishes to contend with these and other challenges. Congrats and the very best !

Bravo BR! Kudos to you. Time will prove you right like that decision you took to switch from an engineer to film analyst. I’m convinced about your reasoning and you’ll do good by it. All the best and admire your gumption to stand for your belief and instinct.
