Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo (Bodyguard), set in the nineteenth century, opens with a shot of mountains looming in the distance. A man (Toshiro Mifune) enters from the right end of the frame. He takes a few steps till we see him clearly – only from the back, though, his frame slicing vertically through the mountain range. (The mountains span from left to right. The man, clad in a kimono, spans from top to bottom.)
He does something unexpected, something that seems to mock the majesty of the spectacle before him. He shakes his shoulders and scratches his head. “Shrugging and scratching myself were my own ideas,” Mifune said. “I used these mannerisms to express the unemployed samurai… Sometimes this kind of man felt lonely, and these mannerisms characterize the loneliness.”

Hmm deja Vu 😀
There was also Walter Hill’s Last man standing which was an official remake of Yojimbo
One missing link here is Dashell Hammett and his Red harvest, which seems to have inspired both yojimbo and FFD. Or put it another way, the similarities between Red harvest and Yojimbo seems to be coincidental, but between FFD and Yojimbo are intentional.

After all there are only so many things that can be done under the sun, all is vanity and vexation of spirit, a striving after wind (the great Solomon). The only novelty that can be explored is the dark abyss of human mind, like the burnout of Gregor Samsa leading to catatonic state of cockroach.

Never knew FFD was an unofficial remake of Kurosawa’s film. I like Mifune’s introduction(?) scene in Rashomon when the character kinda establishes himself during the interrogation—a wide shot showing him riding a horse under an expansive sky pierced by rays of sun. Imagine what if Mysskin were to describe the shot!
BTW, these FP pieces are thoroughly enjoyable. Keep ’em coming. 🙂
