About this installment: This, I wrote last year. It’s an under-production film, so I can’t say for whom (and anyway, someone else has now written the final draft). But this was a screenplay I wrote after a very long break, and I was quite happy with about 60 per cent of it. It had structural issues that we were still fixing when the project was taken away from us. But anyway, here is the opening scene.
SCENE 1
Out of focus lights in the distance, against a black sky. Light electronic music is heard on the soundtrack.
A car is speeding on the road. KAALIDAS and ANJAIAH are talking and laughing. They are celebrating something, but their voices are indistinct. ANJAIAH has a bottle of booze in his hand.
VOICEOVER (KAALIDAS):
Throughout this voiceover, we see quick cuts of Kuwait by night. The car keeps overtaking other cars and the speed keeps increasing.
ஊர்ல இருந்தப்போ நட்சத்திரத்தை பாத்ததே இல்ல. வீட்டுக்கு வெளியே கயிறு கட்டில்ல படுத்தாலும் குப்புற படுப்பேன் . மொதல்ல தலைகாணிய கட்டிக்கிட்டு. அப்புறம் பொண்டாட்டிய கட்டிக்கிட்டு. இங்க வந்து நைட் டூட்டி பண்ண ஆரம்பிச்சப்பறம் தான் வானத்த நோக்கி கண்ணு போச்சு. எங்க திரும்பினாலும் பளபளன்னு லைட்.
ஊர்ல இருந்தப்போ இந்த மாறிலாம் பேச தெரியாது. வாயில கெட்ட வார்த்தை தான் வரும். இங்க வந்தப்புறம் நினைப்பெல்லாம் கவிதையா கொட்டுது. மனுஷன் குடும்பத்தை விட்டுட்டு தனியா எங்கேயாவது இருந்தா கண்ணதாசன் பாட்டெல்லாம் தானா புரிய ஆரம்பிச்சிடும். ஊர்ல இருக்கிறவங்க என் டைரிய பாத்தா.. ஹா ஹா… பாத்தாலும் ஒண்ணும் சொல்ல மாட்டாங்க. அங்க முக்காவாசி பேரு இந்த அஞ்சைய்யா மாதிரி. கூலி வேலைக்கு எதுக்கு ஆனா–ஆவன்னா. காசு எண்ண தெரிஞ்சா போதும்.
நான் யாருன்னு கேக்கறீங்களா? எழுத படிக்க தெரிஞ்ச ஒரு கூலிக்காரன். அதுக்கு மேல சொல்ல ஒண்ணும் பெருசா இல்ல. நான் பொறந்தபோ வலது கால் மேல ஒரு பல்லி விழுந்திச்சாம். நல்ல சகுனமாம். இங்க வேலை கிடைச்சதும் எனக்கு பேர் வெச்ச பூசாரி சொல்லி காமிச்சாரு.
பணம் மட்டும் தான் வாழ்க்கை–னா அந்த பல்லி கரெக்டா தான் விழுந்தது. ஆனா பணம் bank account-அ தான் ரொப்பும். மனச ரொப்ப…
சரி. இதோட நிறுத்தறேன். ஏன்னா அஞ்சு second-ல வாழ்க்கை தலைகீழா மாறப்போகுது.
Ready?
Five… four… three… two…
CRASH. A woman’s scream is heard. Metal squishing sounds. Glass shattering sounds. The car spins and lands upside down. We see a bloodied KAALIDAS through the broken window on his side. Beyond him is Anjayya.
KAALIDAS looks through a half-closed eye out of the window, and he sees an out-of-focus figure, lying on the road: a woman in a purdah, and people gathering around her.
SCENE 2
An out-of-focus woman is lying in a similar position as the woman in the purdah in the earlier scene.

Bottle of booze as a symbol of recklessness, coming danger. Lulling the audience into sense of security with a voice over narration that tells of the narrator’s roots. Then, the countdown to the inciting incident. Segue to the victim/survivor of the storyteller’s recklessness.
It is a generic setup, but simple and clean. But, it needs a director who is on the same page to translate the nuance in the simplicity. Unfortunately, my Tamil cinema training kicked in and I heard lulling background music turning racy, and heavy musical collision with the crash. Multiple cuts showing reactions of victim and perps. Standard shot from the top of people gathering in slo mo. Now, I am hearing the hospital siren… reading scripts of Tamil cinema I have not seen is too much.

The scenes have been small but complete in their own way.
In this one, I liked it that the voice doesn’t quite sound like yours.
But I wonder why you needed the fourth wall breaking lines (நான் யாருன்னு கேத்கிறீங்களா?….இதோட நிறுத்தறேன்)

Love it! For some reason I was reminded of Bringing Out The Dead – as in an eerie feeling that something bad is lurking around the corner.
Is this not something you can develop further? I would’ve guess that this was for the Vetrimaaran film but not sure given the recent snippet of the score by Ilaiyaraaja.
Oh well … would love to see where this goes BR!
