I keep writing scenes and other random stuff. Thought they’d make for fun blog posts, titled ‘Tanglish Talks’. Do read, share, mock, comment, ring the bell icon, whatever !
About this installment: This is from that screenplay, from which you may have read an accident scene (“A scene in Kuwait”) and a grandmother-granddaughter scene (“Presenting… Anuradha”). The following scene is between the two characters who were in the car during the accident. There, we hear the voiceover of the first character. Here, we get a bit of backstory about the second one,.
SCENE 8
CROWDED PRISON CELL: ANJAIAH comes to KAALIDAS.
KAALIDAS looks at him questioningly.
They sit down. ANJAIAH narrates his story, which is shown visually.
We see ANJAIAH’s finger pressing on the trigger and releasing it, pressing and releasing, and he finally presses his finger and we hear a shot and CUT back to prison.
KAALIDAS holds the weeping ANJAIAH and comforts him.
ANJAIAH looks at him, with tear-stained eyes. KAALIDAS looks away guiltily.
We see MALAYALI nurse’s face…
A montage of shots of KAALIDAS that shows KAALIDAS’s growing closeness with this woman.
…and then pull back from her face. Beside her is BOSS’s WIFE. It’s KAALIDAS’s first day at work. It’s a palatial house. Many big dogs are barking. ANJAIAH is the gardener there. He has brought KAALIDAS over from India. He introduces KAALIDAS to BOSS’s WIFE. (Boss is always travelling, and away from home.)
KAALIDAs drives BOSS’s WIFE around.
KAALIDAS chats with MALAYALI NURSE. (Hesitantly)
KAALIDAs washes and polishes car.
KAALIDAS says hello to MALAYALI NURSE. (More confidently.)
KAALIDAs drives BOSS’s KIDS around.
Sudden CUT TO:
KAALIDAS in bed with MALAYALI NURSE.
CUT back to PRISON:
THANGAPUSHPAM. (He bangs his head against prison bars.)
He presses his head hard against the iron bars of the cell door until the bars almost seem to sink into his flesh.

Enjoyed this one, BR. The masculinity measures in the VO story reminded me of The short, happy life of Francis Macomber by Ernest Hemingway. Anjaiah’s confession beautifully “triggers” Kaalidas’s guilt. And both stories come together very well to establish who they are.

Loving this series. However was reminded of one of your reviews where you mentioned about some director that the dialogues look like they have been written down in English and then translated in Hindi. Do you think in English or in Tamil while writing BR? Or does it change depending on which language you are writing for?

Voldemort: “reminded of one of your reviews where you mentioned about some director that the dialogues look like they have been written down in English and then translated in Hindi.”
That was one of Zoya Akhtar’s films, where the Hindi phrases were exact translations of English phrases.
I write directly in Tamil. In the sense, I do not write the lines in English and then translate them into Tamil.
Do you think in English or in Tamil while writing BR?
That, I cannot say. So much of this comes from the unconscious as you are hammering away on the keyboard, so it’s hard to say what is happening.
Maybe you (as a reader) can sense it better. If it sounds fake, then maybe I was thinking in English. If it sounds reasonably real, maybe it’s the latter.
But for me, the world-building and the scene are always more important than the dialogue. The latter — even if it sounds fake — can be corrected. The former — if unconvincing — will destroy the screenplay.
So tell me… did this scene/dialogue sound fake or real? 😀

Ah, right. From what I’ve seen, people who are equally good/comfortable in more than one language, think in that respective language when they talk/write in that language. But when someone’s most comfortable in one language, they think in that language and later translate it into the other language. And I guess there’s also the case of thinking visually where there’s no language involved and the whole thing plays out in the head.
So tell me… did this scene/dialogue sound fake or real? 😀
It sounded very real. Love the concept of this series – random excerpts without a beginning, middle or end. They are fun, especially the “Friends” one.
