Spoilers ahead…
Things just happen. There’s an easy-breezy air about the whole thing, and the film is an easy watch. But it’s hard to take anything or anyone seriously.
In Tushar Jalota’s Dasvi (Netflix), Abhishek Bachchan stars as Ganga Ram Chaudhury, the Chief Minister of a fictional state called Harit Pradesh. Abhishek Bachchan stars as Ganga Ram Chaudhury, the Chief Minister of a fictional state called Harit Pradesh. He is a cheerfully corrupt man, and he appears to be pretty patriarchal, too. His wife, played by Nimrat Kaur, can barely raise her voice in front of him, and the cop that Yami Gautam plays, he disrespectfully calls her chhori. Early in the film, the question of a piece of land appears. It is about whether a mall should be built on it or a school, Ganga Ram automatically chooses a mall: because “mall mein maal hai.”

Poor AB. He’s such a fine actor but man, his script sense!

Actually, i do not even think AB is a good actor. He can do realistic cinema to a certain extent but when it comes to larger than life, filmi acting, he fails miserably. He is too stiff for it. I think for a lot of non-actors, there is one film that marks their career and they work in it because their real life nature matches the character they are playing – like sonam in neerja, sara is atrangi re – Guru was that was Abhishek.
He is too stiff, pretentious in his other films including this one. Manmariyan was another that slightly fit his real life character and did not need filmi acting.

Guru was the film that made me an admirer of AB jr.’s acting but I have liked him in everything he’s been in, including Raavan. I like him as a comic actor very much, I haven’t seen this one but now I have to. Will report back!

@Kasthuri, I don’t agree that AB is stiff or pretentious. Your mileage may vary. I think where he failed was his abysmal script sense. I have liked him in almost everything I have seen of him so far, starting with his first film, Refugee. There’s both vulnerability and innocent in that role and he’s only grown better. He was great in both Dostana and KANK, which were as filmi as you could get. The one film where he failed miserably was Drona because I don’t think he’s cut out for that kind of filmi.

I would agree with Anu – in my opinion, AB jr is an underrated but good (not great) actor who has actually done a wide variety of roles from Yuva to BnB to Bol Bachchan, Manmarziyan, Sarkar to name a few. Maybe script sense or sometimes I feel lack of ambition or drive (that you see in all the very successful stars) might have pulled him down.

If you want to see Jr. B’s range, you should also talk about Game, Players and such. These were out and out commercial glamour films where he looked terrible, non charismatic and in fact had a sizable belly. Even the father has kept himself in remarkably better shape than his son. It’s also to do with that he’s not arty enough nor is he commercial star enough. Essentially he survived because he was seen as the actor against Hrithik/John Abraham, but he really doesn’t measure up to Rajkummar Rao, Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor who debuted later.
His performance in Raavan was a huge gamble that failed and essentially destroyed him, he’s only picking the pieces since. His father’s name made him sail through 14 straight flops, no one was saying it was a burden then.

@Aman, he does not have a lot of range and has had lots of flops but those who like him, really like him. And sure he continues getting films due to nepotism like many others but he IS good at a certain kind of role. He has great comic timing and is very laid back in his acting style which is great. In Ludo he holds up against all the more lauded actors like Rajkumar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi. I’m not going to defend AB to the death or anything, just saying I like him and apparently a few others here do too.
(As an aside, I am quite certain my sister-in-law married my brother because he looks like AB jr.)
This particular film was a total miss for me. AB is fine in it, but as BR says, the script was bizzare and the pace was too slow and off for a comedy. The concept itself was fine but Nimrat Kaur has zero transition though she does well with what she’s given. I really don’t understand how such badly written films even get made. BR was being far too kind, I got bored and stopped watching during the historical sections.

1) AB Jr was great in Happy New Year! He has always been good when it comes to comedy and has been underutilized in this regard especially in the last decade.
2) People who have a loser image of AB Jr are:
a) kids who were born in 1997 and later whose teenage coincides with AB Jr’s bad phase. It is usually when you are a teenager you tend to be more into movies and analyze stardom and such I guess.
b) People who were born earlier but either have forgotten/choose to ignore the golden phase he was in around 2005-2009 or so when he was a much sought after a-lister.
3)How abhishek Bachchan went out of vogue is also pretty strange considering he was giving hits like dum maaro dum, bol Bachchan, dhoom 3 etc alongside his flops yet both the industry and public decided they had had enough of him.

Abhishek Bachchan had no part in Dhoom 3 being a hit, let alone Dhoom 2 or even Housefull 3. He’s had only one solo hit and that was Guru.
I think God evened out him getting hitched to Aish with destroying his stardom, if you see his bad patch really took off after his marriage.

Lol @Aman Basha’s hypothesis. Another hypothesis i have heard is that anyone who dates Salman’s girl is self-sabotaging his career – this includes Ash’s ex Vivek Oberoi (and like you pointed out AB) and Katrina’s ex Ranbir. Ranbir hasn’t had many releases and still had a Sanju. So i am not sure if this is a valid theory.

Like Krishikari, I’m not here to defend AB Jr to death or insist he’s the greatest actor since whenever. I have liked him in what I’ve seen of him, is all.

Yeah even I don’t think world begins at AB Jr’s feet. Just don’t get the why so much hatred/disdain towards him though.
He was never the greatest never the worst either. Mostly has given comfort food type performances in kuch na kaho, run etc
Even the weakest Abhshek Bachchan performance has always been miles ahead of Tiger Shroff’s nest performance. Not that is one guy whose stardom I simply don’t get. Why is everyone treating him with kid gloves?
