oh oh… ,You are on an interview spree now , good for you :). there are some problems with video clarity on this one, your camera shaking too much for one. but your thoughts are as always very illuminating.
I’d rather see a flawed work of a directorial brain than a successful storytelling exercise by somebody who’s not a director
Yup, same here. Prefer to watch and rewatch a hundred “One from the Hearts” and “New York New Yorks” or “Mera Naam Jokers” and “Dil Ses” and even Maniyin Selvans 🙂 over the kind of committee produced, hack-directed crap that today’s Hollywood or most of the Indian film industries are churning out. – though I still can’t sit through Kattru Valiyadai, there is always that one exception I guess 🙂
And I believe that with your revulsion for movies that “push the message” and are intend on changing the world, you must be running away from the crapfests that current Hollywood churns out as well, with their emphasis on activism over artistry.
Zoom interviews 3 yrs after the pandemic is just seems unacceptable and not making the effort. Considering BR is based out of Chennai and this is for IIT Madras film society, can’t they have done an in-person interview with better setting/sound?
Is it just me or others feel the same way?
@thar.rocker: People lead busy lives. Travel takes time. I’d rather Zoom interview than no interview. Not like we’re paying for any of this, to be complaining 😉
If the pandemic isn’t over you yet, it’ll never be over 🙂
Btw, just because we’re not paying (but we’re directly and indirectly) doesn’t mean we can’t critique, don’t you think? I feel the interview flows much better if it’s in person and so even if I’m just going to listen to it, I’d much rather listen to a in-person than virtual interview.
“If the pandemic isn’t over you yet, it’ll never be over ”
I understand that you mean this in jest but please have some empathy for the world-altering event that everyone went thru (that we all had to change our lives & mindsets for) that some might still be struggling to come out of.
“Btw, just because we’re not paying (but we’re directly and indirectly) doesn’t mean we can’t critique, don’t you think?”
It’s completely within your right to critique. But since we didn’t put our money where our mouths are (“directly OR indirectly “-> these small channels aren’t monetized), I don’t expect any criticism given by you or me to have an effect on how these things operate in the future.
“I feel the interview flows much better if it’s in person and so even if I’m just going to listen to it, I’d much rather listen to a in-person than virtual interview.”
Agreed. Thankfully, no one is forcing any of us to watch this video. Feel free to find an in-person interview to watch/listen to instead 🙂 Shouldn’t be a problem in this content-rich world we live in.
I most definitely didn’t say it in “jest”. It’s just the reality. Except for immunocompromised, a lot of healthy ones have moved on.The Pandemic is now more in the head than anything real and its individual choice to move on or be tied by it forever.
Also it has become very rare to see zoom interviews (at least in my youTube feed) these days. I completely agree that it’s BR’s wish to do these interviews. The fact that the other in-person interview posted at the same time as this one elicited 20+ responses and this one had just 1 meaningful response says it all. Peace out!
Apart from the long term health issues that people have ended up facing – both mental and physical, which can’t be empathize enough, I feel there are many changes that have been forced onto the society that some of them won’t go away, at least for now. Even at the peripheral level, pre-pandemic we wouldn’t have heard of differential pay packages for WFH and work from office, just as an example. So the pandemic might have come down to insignificant levels just as a statistic, but the impact on people’s lives is still very very real and enduring…

Has it ever occured to you that the subject topic of an interview might have something to do with the level of discussion it generates rather than the Zoom or on-set nature of it?
“Except for immunocompromised, a lot of healthy ones have moved on.” – What’s your definition of ‘immunocompromised’? I am 37. I used to play tennis 6 days a week, occasionally 7, before the pandemic. I am talking tournament tennis, not leisurely weekend warrior ‘hitting’. Had covid twice and went through a phase where even walking up stairs was tough. I am able to jog now at a pretty low speed, but tennis is still a long way off.
Sorry, my intent was not to be insensitive regarding the sensitive topic of COVID and to cause any offense or upset anyone.
It was primarily in the context of having a in-person interview vs. virtual and when COVID was thrown as a reason to not do it, I had a disagreement. I do completely agree with BR’s reasoning for why a College society can’t afford it. But not sure if I agree with Yajiv’s comment on subject topic being the reason for lack of discussion here as both were titled interviews with BR…
@Madan – Sorry to hear about your health situation. Hope you recover from Long COVID effects soon.
“But not sure if I agree with Yajiv’s comment on subject topic being the reason for lack of discussion here as both were titled interviews with BR…”
In this case, I was referring to the fact that the other interview was done by a psychiatrist (as seen in the title: Mindscape Matters) hence eliciting comments there that were related to mental health (& Covid’s effects on it). But it’s ok, we can agree to disagree.
BTW, both interviews have an almost-similar number of comments now 😉
@thar.rocker
Been in an IIT Film society. We barely had funds to shoot college level sketches, let alone a celebrity interview with studio setting and sound. Of course, mine was more than a decade ago. But unless there is a humanities professor who teaches film studies, I don’t imagine student clubs getting that much funding.

thar.rocker: See, it is not just “BR’s wish”. I say yes if I gave the time – especially for schools / colleges.
A live interview takes lights, sound equipment etc. and maybe a college society cannot afford it.
