Hmm. 🙂 OK, let me first get this out of the way, that I abhor abuse and the kind of vitriol that is bandied about these days on social media (mainly twitter). Reason that I have never and will never open a twitter account (am not on insta either, but that’s more on account of laziness!)
But, that said, Ooohh, I feel so heartbroken and shattered 😁 at some of the reviewers’ angst and irritation at receiving “mean” comments. So crushingly sad for the poor lambs (not that I have written those). Is there, however, a standard for “mean” reviews, which twist the knife in unnecessarily?
Am quoting these from a reviewer (not on the FC list, but who is very well known and has won the Ramnath Goenka award for excellence in journalism, no less.) No prizes for guessing who. (I don’t normally do “blind” posts, but hey, Rajeev Masand’s made those de rigueur, no?)😁
“cocktail of fun stunts, attractive stars, grand settings, terrible acting, conflicted attitudes and closeted conservatism.”
“The rest of the cast is laughable, with each rivalling the other for the year’s Worst Acting Awards…….who hams here to such an extent that he makes Sohrab Modi seem under-stated in comparison. The extras in every single scene –– seem to be competing with the memorably howlarious bit-part players of the black-and-white era. And….. is so bad, he should be declared a threat to society.”
“the ridiculous over-acting becomes hard to take and the lack of freshness in the storyline sinks in……over-statement seems to be the demand ….. in this cinematic diptych ”
Yes, readers read (and remember) mean reviews, too. 🙂
BR- for the record, this is not aimed at you at all. It’s fun reading your reviews, they are very analytical (even if one doesn’t agree with your views); the ones on films you hated are an absolute scream. But there is humor, and then there is “show off” meanness. Taking shots just coz one can. Sadly, many of your peers fall in the latter category.

I don’t like these two guys who scouted these supposedly “mean” comments for I could come up with a lot worse by just having a cursory glance over the YouTube comments.
Clearly, they were afraid of pissing their bosses and have settled on these meek comments which they’ve masqueraded as “mean” comments. Shame! 😀

@Jai: How dare you speak such words against Mr. Masand? The level of discourse has fallen further and further, don’t you know after reading Shekhar Gupta’s piece how respectable awards are 🙂 He’s probably busy elsewhere feeding his little birdies or else he would’ve been in the video too, given his occasional guest appearances on FC. And Mr. Masand might have written mean reviews, but he has proudly supported many strugglers against the online harassment they face, what these people actually had the gall to use their own identity to criticize people:
Wish Masand was there for everyone in Bollywood, who face online harassment and defamation over no fault of theirs. Oh, wait a sec…

I agree with the others – these were hardly ‘mean’ especially if the standard is what you usually see on social media. Just a cursory glance over the comments under the YouTube video should give you more.
In fact, this one made me grin, BR, it was directed at you:

I find him crazy fast. He must consider breathing when he speaks. I mean this well.

I was scared this was going to be about the mean comments on this blog! These were very mild comments, not mean at all!
Also, do all those young women look exactly alike? I can’t tell them apart. Maybe they could differentiate their hairstyles a bit but that’s not going to touch the real issue which is that FC lacks diversity.
(How’s that for a mean comment?)

Apropos of nothing, I wonder if BR gets shy, whenever Karan Johar tells him BR is academic. He seems like he discovered that word after reading BR.

“Mean” Comments?????? Whatever was curated for this Zoom call is strictly Amateur Hour.
The Late Lamented Prof and I spewed more mean-spirited vitriol in these comments sections once upon a time 🙂
